Fear not John. I have all the pics that were in this thread. Once my schedule dies down I will restore this thread to what it once was.

I agree, but it would be common courtesy to ask him about it. Or are you suggesting we skip all that nonsense?

I too think someone should ask him out of courtesy since that's the bulk of his Vol I book. Even though his pics are all over the Internet (I'm guilty too), this in over 50% of his book, so maybe someone should ask him first.

I asked him while ago and he didn't seem like he really cared about the thread. Even offered to pay him some $$$ to pay photobucket to keep the images up. Almost like he just kinda walked away from it.

I have gotten plenty of pms on this thread so it gave me the driving force to reserect it. The forum owners are on board, a couple members have helped me out considerably (one really I couldn't have done without) so it will once live this winter when I have time. After tracking down the photos, which btw are all over the Internet and can be downloaded by anybody, I figured that was good enough reason to use them. After all, if I can access the photos by a search engine then we, the best akforum in the world, should at least have them.

Rob has added so much to the ak community that I don't want to see his photos, work, and dedication to just slip away like many have. Also, keep in mind that Rob left the country months ago and we don't know when or if he will be back.

Photobucket is weird. I payed for the yearly subscription, then they didn't ask for anymore money for what seemed like 5 years.
When the issue came up, I was in the middle of retiring, moving and changing everything in my life. So money for photobucket was not high on the list.

Even when the monthly bandwidth is used, the images are still viewable, you just have to open the links. Its just that they don't appear in the thread.

If someone wants to host the photos so they appear all the time, thats fine but IF they are photos from this thread.. If they are photos that only appear in my book, then NO, I do not give permission. Long story short, the photos in this thread are photos that were free for me and photos I did NOT post were ones I had to spend money to get. Travel costs, etc.

And yes, please buy my books.. They are what fund my trips to go photograph stuff. I am planning a trip next month to go through and photograph "a few thousand" Russian AKM/AKMS.

When you go on your photo trip don't forget early Tula AKM Rifles :)

Great to see you back Rob!

I have gotten alot of PMs over this thread so I'm glad they are here. I have them all saved and was going to download them to the forum but now with your blessing that is great! I will only be downloading the ones pictured, no more.

Either way, you just made it a lot easier for me! ;)

Hey Rob, I'm interesting in the XY stampings on the late AKM rifles. I can't tell from a couple of photos for the 1974-1975 AKM's since they're a little dark right on the XY stampings, (all the photos are great btw, I even own some of your books!) but I'm trying to tell which year they changed the stampings on those late AKM rifles from the regular XY to the XY stampings more commonly seen on AK-74 receivers.

Do you know if it was '74, '75, '76, '77 when Izhmash and Tula changed from their AKM XY style stamping to the AK-74 style XY stampings?

Buy the Russian specific akm book, however Izhmash changed the left first Y to the AK74 style in 1976 or 1977 I am pretty sure. Tula/Izzy didnt do things at the same time FYI. Design changes were implemented different.

I actually realized I had the volume that had late AKM rifles present, and the images are much better. It looks like Izmash changed it in 1973. And Tula possibly changed it in 1975.

Funnily enough, there’s also a Romanian Md.63 dated 1977 that has the same AK-74 style XY stampings. Hmmm.
