Ok more info. Few days ago they tested 2 rifles shoting 25 000 rounds with no problem. It was testing of accuracy while changing barels. Capacity of mags will be 10,20,30 and 70 (4 round in line not drum). All polimer and 30 will be also metal. I will post photos and videos later... Rifle is intended to be used in serbian army platoon insted of M70, M72 and M76. MoD gave the order for Zastava and military institutes it looks very serious. 3 domestic producers of night vision thermal scopes offered their products for testings with the rifles also.
Have to say that I realy like this idea. I never liked M21 rifle since it is not much better idea of M70 but this new Zastava has much better idea behind it in my opinion. Since there is tons of 7.62x39 rounds in Serbia, till PPU produce enough 6.5 they can use the same rifle and later also. And changing of barel is very easy if u ever used PK you know what I mean...

That stock is just for testing it is not decided about stock. For mags it is decided as I know. All the rifles are prototypes it depends from the buyer what they want. For ex there are standard ak selector or the new one.

Mmmm yes. So want a m21. The shame of it is we won't see legit barrels attached to the kits. Hopefully not nitride nightmares stateside like the aims74 entries.

I figured.

Gotta say Batob I'm loving this thread. This is the kind of thing that used to excite me about shot show. Sadly it's just more crappy us made AK's and ar flavors these days. I don't know if I will ever get to have one of these but I love looking at it. Thanks for sharing.

Nobody noticed barrel locking mechanism on #15 post?
I found more info, Zastava is working on this rifle for 6 months now. All these photos are few months old, I am waiting for more and as soon as I see it I will post here. I am very excited about this rifle, this is truly first new AK rifle Zastava is working on in the last 20-30 years. M21 is project from the late 80s nobody likes that rifle since it is not better than M70 series. But I think this rifle has future, it is MoD project and it is not only Zastava but other producers from Serbia. PPU is working on 3 types of rounds 6.5 they already decided about case, powder and bullet type as I heard...

Oh yes, we noticed! As Leviathan said it would be nice to to see the barrel change on video, and also interesting to see how/if it affects over all performance.

So is this being seriously looked at for use as standard service rifle? Or for specialized use only?

Also if this is adopted for general service, would it be the only new cartridge to be adopted by a military since China adopted the 5.8x42?

Batob this is all really interesting. Thanks for posting these pics. :)

The more I search about this modular rifle it gets more interesting...
Now I have information that Zastava started development of that rifle in 2015. In may 2016 they showed them in public; in july of 2016 PM of Serbia said that SF units [brigade] will get that rifle in march 2017.
Zastava factory, as I heard, is now preparing production line and soon production is starting first series...
Looks like it is sure deal

Ok new info, rifle is finished as they write in serbian media and in few days they will show it to military officials... On serbian forums they wrote that it passed all the tests in Zastava and that now it depends from the army what they want to chose from cosmetic, ergonomic details... Soon more info. If you are interested this is Zastava standard for testings - they shot before and after "torturing" rifle and it should work without problem. First temperature -50 than +60 celsius. Than dropping 10 times from 2.5m hight on hard surface concrete. Than 30 min into water. During this tests rifle is loaded and different things not just accuracy are checked.

asking a board full of AK-holics if there's any interest in a modular AK that's still being developed.

Like.. bleeding edge technology and almost insider information.

While there might not be as much traffic in the country specific forums, I guarantee you there's a LOT of interest, there just might be a little less discussion going on. Not everyone who reads a thread comments on it.. unless they're a chatty bastard like me.

Well I thought you said Funny because you didn't believe in my statement about free floating barrel. When I first saw last photo I posted I first thought they put front sight back for no reason except it look strange like its more to it and now I get it why it is like that… I never heard about free floating barrel on AK and I am very excited to hear more about it. And yes sometimes I feel like a spy sharing really fresh informations but guys who work on it and test it they write on serbian forums so I think its ok.

edit> and I forgot, they wrote that free floating (and system around gas tube) can be on new fixed barrels AKs and barrels of modular AKs

Polish Tantal (1989-1994 production) rifle has what some would consider a free-float barrel feature. I'll add my thanks too, Batob, really appreciate you sharing this information with us.
