The only place you will find the SAR series for sale is in the secondary market, ie. FS forums, on-auctions sites, gun shows etc....

The SARs were the banned variations. shortly after the 1994 ban expired, the WASRs series (1,2,3) are the ones that replaced them. They are the same rifles as the SARs, made in the same factory, imported by the same importer (CENTURY), have the same crappy finish, plauged with the same cant front sight and gas blocks as the SARs, except they have bayonet lugs, threaded barrels, but lack a magazine "dimple"

from what I have seen on the prices of the SARs, folks think way too highly of their used and abused rifle, and want way more for it then what you can get a NIB WASR for

IMO, it is not worth paying extra for a used and abused banned rifle. If you are looking for a romanian 5.45 then get a NIB WASR2.

That's not correct. SARs were imported (alongside the WASR series!) beginning in the late '90s and ending around 2002 or 2003. Previous to the SARs there were Romaks and CURs in their place.

They quit importing SARs and now only import WASRs (presumably because they're cheaper) which they convert to hi-cap and sell for more money. Clever marketing on the part of Century. After all, why import a "correct" rifle when you can import a cheaper model and sell it for the same price or more?

 

I agree with the last poster...

And as a side note...all of the SAR series should have the mag dimples as opposed to the WASR not having them...

 

Picked up my 5.45 WASR at dunhams beginning of the summer on sale for $240. Couldn't be happier for the price or my timing. They're stupid priced now.

Off course, if you can't wait for a 5.45, there always the Polish Tantal. Budgunshop.com has them right now. A bit pricier than a WASR though...

 

don't hold your breath on century. they also have the yugo fixed stock noted as coming soon. that ain't happening either. dunhams has a warehouse full of wasr2's in different configs that they have had for a long time. lo cap, hi cap, dragunov stock, regular stock, they just ran a sale in august and the lo cap dragunov stock was $260.

WASR 2 rifles do not have bayo lug or threaded barrel either. Some were turned down in front. A few variations exist as Dragunov stocks and such.

There was and still is a lot of whining and clamoring over the 5.45 rifles and lack of ammunition and no long term ammunition. Now they have crept into the somewhat sought after category. Always happens this way. Buy what is available, affordable and shootable and it will age well. :dance: :dance:
