Mandolin case

About a month ago I got a like-new, rubberized fabric M60 spare barrel/parts carrier at the swapmeet for five bucks. I was surprised to discover a Saiga AK74 folder just fit into the case with less than an inch to spare. Am sure the PPsH pistol would fit comfortably inside. Because of the triangular shape of that zippered case, with carrying sling, it looks pretty small and nondescript to the average civvie...

 

I picked up the same bag years ago, could have been here. I cleaned off the writing on the bag and now its a plain zippered green bag. Holds my MAK90 folder and mags comfortably.

 

The modern VIOLIN CHEAP (think starter cases for middle school kids in band) cases work really well. The are made from Cordura Nylon and have a styrofoam body to protect the contacts with a fake velvet liner. You can peel the liner back, trim the styrofoam to fit and reglue the velvet. I can keep a full size Yugo under folder and two mags in one. Avout 3/4 the size of a tennis racket case and more protective. Cover it with PEACE signs in Sharpies, save the Whales and Green Peace stickers.... No body will touch it!!

 

I stuff an HK33k SBR in a racquetball case with a 30 rd mag. Tight fit but it works good. Big Wilson W on the side helps hide it but I like the idea of teenage art to help with the disguise.

 

I used a tennis racket case for my 2 SBR side folders. It has 3 separate pockets plus a zipper on the side that holds my paperwork. They sell smaller ones as well. Got it at a Goodwill for $15.

 

A VZ-58 folder in a tennis racquet bag makes for a good trunk gun combo. Nobody bothers stealing cheap sports equipment and there's a decent chance they'll pass right over it. If the entire vehicle is stolen...well that's why you use something cheap.

 

I use an M60 barrel bag, and it works great. I can fit the rifle, cleaning gear, 3 mags and 90 rounds into it.

 

When the Tavor comes back I have every intention of keeping it in a cheap tennis racquet case.

 

Anyone wanting to do this should check your local/State gun laws, because there are some places where its NOT legal to keep firearms in bags etc. that are not designed to hold firearms.

 

Well my favorite thing to use is a dropcase+sling only, but that definitely won't fly in the city.

I was originally going to go with a tennis case for my AKSU, but decided against it because I doubt anyone plays tennis in the winter around here. I went with a mandolin case instead. Obviously it's still a little shady carrying that around, but I guess it helps that I'm a musician.

I can actually fit the gun with the stock extended, a mag already in it (if SHTF), and a filled four mag pouch all at the same time without it being too tight. I don't defend my apartment with an AKSU, but it is nice to have it all ready to rock and roll if ever needed. The side pocket is huge- I keep eyes, ears, oil, cleaning gear, and first aid stuff in it at all times.

I actually stuck the NFA paperwork in the part you normally fill out that address card. It's really nice, every time I've been to the range I just flash it when asked... never was asked to take the whole thing out

 

Camera tripod cases work pretty well, too. I use a Vivitar padded case for my Maadi, and it will fit the rifle and a Hungarian 4 mag shoulder pouch with room to spare. I pad it out with a fleece jacket and toss it behind the seat of my truck.

 

This is a bit off the beam, but the discussion about cases recalls a story told by the daughter of the great comedian Jack Benny. Perhaps best known for playing a squeaky, off key violin, in reality he was an accomplished violinist. I believe he received a invitation to play at the White House for then president Nixon. As he came to the entrance toting his violin case, he was detained by a Secret Service agent. The agent said "What do you have in the case?" Benny, somewhat poleaxed, replied "A machinegun!" The agent then said “Oh, okay enter. I was afraid for a moment that it was your violin.”

 

Didn't a manufacturer sell Thompson remakes and sell them with custom fit guitar cases a couple years ago ?

For the topic I don't remember the member here on this forum but he sold a bunch of tennis bags here not too long ago maybe a year ago, cool colors too.

 

Gun looks fine in a lightweight tennis racket case if its lying on a table or the backset of your car, but the minute its picked up, the weight of the gun makes it obvious that something other than a tennis racket is concealed inside.

 

Yikes I never thought of that. Pretty much defeats the purpose then (for myself atleast). Luckily the mandolin case I use doesn't do that

I like these ideas, it is something I had considered for many years but never executed. I suppose one could have a larger, flat box for scoped rifles and place a Fender sticker on it and so forth as it could appear to be an electric guitar case.

Another option is the so called "bail out" bag. My understanding is that these were designed for chopper pilots to carry an M4 and 8 mags. It works great for my Krink, and should also work for an underfolder. It does come in other colors as well.

who makes something like that and how much ??? any other rifles fit inside there besides yours pictured ??

I have. But the ability to get an actual racquet bag for 3 bucks keeps those from appealing.

 

They work for sidefolders too...

I thought the entire point of this thread was subterfuge--to hide one's rifle in plain sight with 'innocent' looking cases or bags?

We all know how hysterical the anti-gun public is, and well, hiding one's proclivities in such a way is a useful measure in maintaining that sort of privacy.

 

Yeah, camo and straps, anything that looks military is defeating the purpose of the thread I think.
