The length and tightness of fit of the actual handguard used has a lot to do with how tightly the retainer is in place. Try another lower handguard or a small veneer shim at the front 'U' shape of the handguard.

 

I always thought the retainer should lock solidly onto the barrel and not move?

I'm afraid the rotational force that can be exerted on the hand guard could break the tab that fits into the receiver. I have a nice NOS set of polish furniture I want to put on this rifle and am afraid of messing it up.

 

Test mount the lower handguard. The insertion nub of the handguard into the receiver/trunnion gap stabilizes it.., as well as the pressure of the handguard against the retainer in front. Only the AKM has stabilizing slots in the barrel for the retainer. The AK47 lacks theses as do Chinese and Zastava AK firearms.

 

Different handguards may fit differently, yes, but loose I would not like...
A very thin shim in the barrel relief may help or shimming the handguard as above.

 

use a tin snips and cut out a section of an aluminum can to use as a shim and see if that helps if you don't have shim stock laying around(who does??):thumbsup:


whatever you do, DON"T use your wife's nice kitchen shears...and don't ask me how I know either...:nutkick:

 

If you need shim stock I'll send it top you for free. Just have to glue it in place & trim. It it is easy to find.

 

I have used folded up bits of aluminum foil on mine before. Place it in the notch, slide the handguard retainer down and lock it into place. The foil is solid if folded enough but still has enough give where I don't feel like I'm having to put too much pressure on the lever. Keeps it locked in nice and tight.
