This question came up in a discusion and I was not satisfied with all the answers that were given, the question was, when a reciever for a firearm is "destroyed" does any one ,such as the BATF or a FFL dealer need to know, and if so what proof if any needs to be shown. My buddy has a wsar that he wants to demil and rebuild all because the reciever isnt dimpled. I told him to leave it alone it shoots fine and is in pretty decient shape for what it is, but he says not having the mag well dimples bothers him

the only issue you may encounter is i believe the rifle may be serial numbered to the trunnion.

if you are in doubt, cut the receiver, throw it in a zippy bag and save it for proof..

It might be easier to just dimple it. If you have a press I'm sure for the cost of a receiver, you could have someone make you a dimpling jig. The hardest part would be removing the lower mag supports without thinning receiver too much. I'd bet the spot welds would even go away almost entirely. You can legally demill and destroy receiver, however you must destroy receiver, as the trunnion is serialized and not the receiver. When you remove trunnion from receiver you are removing the serial from the receiver.

it's his rifle, if he want to destroy the reciever then he destroys it, he doesn't have to tell anybody in the gov't he did it.

the only requrement that I know where a person has to document the destruction of a receiver (firearm) to the ATF are SOTs. If they can't find someone who will buy that firearm, if they are eligiible to have that firearm transfered ie. post 86 MG. or other NFA weapons that they don't want to pay the tax and transfer the item to them personally if they decide to give up their licence.

hey, you can't fix stupid. in this case if he is stupid enough to go and destroy a perfectly good receiver, so he can spend more money to buy another receiver, let him go.

look at it this way, he is putting money into the economy, a stupid guys money is just as good as a smart guys money
