Looking for input; PSA or Riley Defense AK74 rifle

Well, I have nearly 2 cases worth of 7n6 5.45x39 ammo & no guns chambered in that caliber & I figured it was time to finally get one.

I'm looking at 2 different US made AK 74 rifles & I'm not sure which to go with, either a PSA AK74 or Riley Defense Ak74. If it matters, it will be a triangle side folder too. I was going to go with the Riley gun as it has a chrome lined barrel over the nitrided PSA barrel but I figured that I'd ask if anyone else has any input they could offer on which of these places makes a better 5.45 AK, as they seem to me to be very evenly matched in build quality.
They both cost about the same & both have somewhat of a stigma attached to them, but I really believe that it is unwarranted nowadays. Sure they had bugs to be worked out as all newly released guns do, but from what I've seen & heard, they are both pretty much good to go now (at least with their newer made guns).
Also for the record, I dont have $2500+ to buy a Bulgarian factory made gun or a parts kit build. I wish I did because that's what I'd go with as they are superior, but I don't.
Lastly, there is kind of a 3rd option & that would be to wait for Kalashnikov USA to release their AK 74, but who knows when that would be. Plus, from the examples I've seen other people get lately, KUSA's quality control has gone downhill in the last year or 2.
So, what I'd like to know is would you go with a PSA or Riley Defense ak74 & why?

One of my shooting buddies just picked up a PSA side folder AK-74 just this week with a repro plum stock.

Overall, it looks well built and functional. The price is not bad. It is not a 1 to 1 AK-74 clone if that matters. I'm looking forward to taking my kit built 74s along with his PSA for a shooting comparison.

Besides my import AKs, I build all of my AKs, AKMs AK-74s, RPKs and only own one US made AK, a KP-9. If I was buying and not building, I would look very hard at a KUSA 74 variant first then the PSA.

My only experience with Riley built rifles is a AKM in 7.62, it was good but not for me.

I do not own a Riley Defense product but it sound like you are leaning that way. Why not give it a shot? This will not be your last rifle and it's likely to be a great shooter for the kind of round count most enthusiasts shoot.
Classic AK74 Rifle-Riley Defense - AtlanticFirearms.com this a beautiful rifle for sure. However, PSA has more selection with AK 74 rifles and pistols, hard choice. YouTube, Blue Jean Operator put a 10,000 rounds later video out a couple months ago, check it out
Good luck, let us know what you did!

Maybe it is just the angle in the pics but that Riley AK74's buttstock Atlantic is selling just looks odd/ugly and so does the handguards as far as the vent cuts on the upper and shape of the lower handguard.

Excellent question … Just my 2 cents here — So, I gotta share that Riley Defense is a Family owned business based in Hickory, North Carolina — that coupled with a phenomenal reputation for superior quality designed and produced AK firearms (Made in the U.S.A.) ... And, Riley Defense is highly recognized and respected by several AK-47/74 industry experts as a highly reliable and very well performing firearm, along with the fact that Riley is known by hundreds of gun owners as a reputable gun manufacturer that genuinely LISTENS to the customer -- that my friends truly says it all here !!! ✅

That is a good suggestion. Someday I'll pick up or build another AK in 5.56 besides my Chicom or Galil rifles. I like them and ammo is not hard to find or for me to reload. Mag availability can be an issue.

Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch. A rifle in 5.45 is a very fun itch to scratch. It is a classic Soviet and historic option.

OP has "two cases" of 7n6 which I'm guessing he means two crates at 2160 rounds iirc. Even if not and he has two tins of half the amount, that can be a lot or a little to practice with. Myself, I hold on to my 7n6, buy commercial when it was cheaper and reload.

I'd love to be able to shoot my 5.45 AKs and RPK more. Hopefully PSA and others will put out some at reasonable prices.
