Long term storage in a crawl space?

I am settling on a house very soon. It doesn not have a basement, it has a crawl space. I was wondering how viable it would be to store ammo in the crawl space. If this is viable, how do I go about doing it? Will ammo in "spam" cans hold up ok? If I can't use spam cans, how can I store them? What type of container? Do I need to use desicant packs or anything?

I'm thinking long term bulk storage.

I am primarily thinking of 7.62 or .223 ammo, but I am also getting into reloading. Can I store reloaded pistol ammo the same way? Shotgun ammo? Do I need to do anything different?

Bad idea.

1. Not secure
2. Damp
3. WILD tempature swings
4. Dirt floor.....

I'd find a nice closet.

store my ammo under my bed and in a lockable old us army footlocker.
just buy some .30cal ammo tins and put petroleum jelly around the edge of the lid.

does the crawlspace have a moisture barrier? is it insulated?
i stored most of my ammo in my mom's basement crawlspace for over three years. It was a four year old build and the crawlspace was insulated and had a vapor barrier of thick plastic sheeting placed on the floor. also the floor was made of a thick layer of gravel. it was dry, clean,no wild temperature swings. stayed at around 70 degrees year round. i also used spam cans and military ammo cans to store my stash in.
i have yet to have any problems with FTF.
Now my dad's basement was another story after it flooded ( concrete block basement ) and he waited a week to let me know and to help start cleaning it up. still had the spam cans and ammo cans, but i stored my stuff above the floor a good 7" - 8". everything after that was damp. ( love my dad but i didn't store ammo there afterward)

I keep my ammo in the garage, but I'm running out of room. Here's another idea - I have been looking real hard those plastic storage lockers you can get at HD and Lowe's for storing yard thingies that you want to keep out of the weater. My house has a shaded corner that would be perfect for one of those, and I was thinking that since you can lock them, it would be a nice 2nd storage place.

While all the info on storage and climate control are great advice, remember also places like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Soviet block, Africa, and South America, where there are no climate controled desicant stored ammo hideouts. Stuff is in caves, buried in sand, jungle, etc, etc.
Dug up and used.

I'd strongly recommend against using any petroleum-based product on rubber. No, it's not the end of the world if you do, but silicone-based sprays are specifically made to replenish the rubber gasket. While silicone spray has a petroleum-based propellant, this quickly evaporates leaving a nice layer of silicone. Petroleum-based products can eat away at rubber.

I recommend taking off the lid and placing it rubber side up on cardboard in an open garage or other well-ventilated area. Spray the rubber well. Most silicone spray cans come with a thin 'straw' to get a good narrow stream going. Let it dry and then apply another layer.

It's always best to start out with the best condition cans possible. Definitely worth spending the extra money.
