How to demil Tantal muzzle brake?

Guys

It is finally time to start on my Tantal build (thanks to David and his Tantal receiver). Anyway, I live in the good old CT, and can't have all the features because of our great AWB (I feel safer every time I say it). Anyway, I have ground off the bayonet lug, acquired a welded open Tantal stock, and now must do something about the barrel threads and grenade launcher before I pick up the receiver at my FFL.

My plan is to weld the muzzle brake to the barrel (oh the horror ), but am still undecided on what to do about the grenade launcher function of the brake. I though about turning down the bosses that guide the grenade, then press on a larger ring to keep you from sliding a grenade on. By the way, how large is the ID of a Combloc rifle grenade?

Anyway, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Story

Thanks for the reply. I have an all matching kit, to include the muzzle brake, so I had no intention of butchering an original one. I was going to buy a CNC Warrior copy to screw up. I hated grinding the bayonet lug off, but figured if I ever get free of Commie CT, I could have it repaired.

I had seen the muzzle nut you referenced, and thought it had possibilities. However, I really wanted some type of brake on the Tantal. While I would love to retain the original look, but maybe something else would work.

The CT State Police Weapons unit says that I can weld or silver solder the muzzle device on to be legal. I have no idea how to do the solder. I had a falling out with my welder, so I need to find someone else who can TIG this thing on!

Just my .2 cents.

I would find someone who could silver solder that thing on.
Its a lot easier to clean up if you ever move out of that occupied territory.

I was going to silver solder an AMD brake on my AMD-65 build, but then decided to wait and just do it
as an registered SBR.

But solder is going to be a lot easier and less destructive to clean up .......

Good luck with your build and remember to post some picts.

I agree that solder it the way to go. I just need to find someone who can do it (or learn to do it myself). I just don't want to wind up burning all the finish off, and screwing up the temper of the barrel.

Does anyone have a link to a tutorial on how to do this?

My other issue is that the Tantal brake doubles as a grenade launcher. Est verboten in the DRC (Commie CT). Sooo, I have to figure out a way to disable the launcher feature.

1. I swapped my Tantal brake with an AK74 brake, works just dandy.
2. I'd recommend knocking out the retaining pin and spring, remove that spiffy washer and set aside with the Tantal GL brake before you do the silver soldering.
3. Ask and ye shall receive.

If you dont want the Tantal brake you can get a 14 to 24mm adapter and use a 74 brake. The adapter will thread on and over the Tantal's extended barrel, and that part will be inside of the muzzle brake. The only downside is that the detent pin is lower that usual, but being it has to be permantly mounted, this will not be an issue.

Thanks for the input guys!

I think I may just get one of those repro 74 style breaks and attach it to the barrel. I just had to think what corrosive ammo will do to that threaded joint if I ever want to get it appart! Maybe I will just shoot non-corrosive thru the Tantal?

Or, since I have a lathe, I may just turn a sleeve to fit another Tantal brake. I have several barrels I have to have the brake permanently attached to, so I am debating doing it myself or sending them out.

Can anyone suggest a cool looking muzzle brake that will fit the standard threads? I screwed my AMD brake on it, and it doesn't look too bad, but the barrel nose stick thru most of it. I was thinking maybe one of those AK builder extended AMD brakes?
