I never personally cared for this feature, but it was recently pointed out to me that someone with young children may enjoy the ability to render the firearm useless by hiding or retaining the magazine.
I have a friend who just became a daddy, and I was talking with him about this idea, and he really liked it, but neither one of us know much about which weapons have them and which don't.
I know the Browning Hi Power was the first, and that's a fine weapon, but it would just be nice for my buddy in the decision process if I could give him an exhaustive list of possible makes/models to chose from.

Bersa Thunder.

Absolutely idiotic feature. You keep the gun out of a kids reach until you are able to teach them how to and how NOT to handle a weapon. My brother and I were average kids and survived a childhood with a gun in just about every room in the house. It's called parenting.

I don't think magazine disconnect is really useful for child safety unless you don't practice good gun safety and remove the magazine but keep one round chambered. If a child picks up a gun that's doesn't have a magazine it's not firable anyway.

What magazine disconnect is useful for though is confrontations on the street. If you find yourself in a wrestling match for your gun, and it looks like you're going to lose that battle, your thumb is in the perfect place to quickly eject the magazine before losing control of the weapon. While your opponent tries to take a shot, realizes it won't fire, looks around for the magazine, and reinserts it, hopefully, you've successfully implemented your backup plan. High tailing it out of there, drawn a knife, whatever... at least it gives you a few seconds in a fight where life and death are decided in seconds. If you are ultimately able to retain control of your gun, you can just insert an additional magazine and fire away.

It's not something that is ideal to happen, but neither is needing to use your gun. Getting shot sucks, but getting shot with your own gun by an opponent who was unarmed sucks even more. There are some police forces that issue pistols with magazine disconnect and require training for just that scenario.

Have him special order a California gun. I believe most are required to have a magazine disconnect. Not 100% sure but something to look at.
That's iffy. A magazine disconnect wasn't one of the original things needed for the Handgun Roster, so most popular makes and models were grandfathered without them. You're more likely to just get a piece with a 10 round mag.

The California S&W M&P series is a good choice. Plus, you get the bonus of having an M&P slide that doesn't have a wall of disclaimer text engraved into it.

Most S&W 3rd gen pistols. The ones without the mag safety will have a warning on it but most have the safety. The only ones that never did were police guns and even then the department had to ask for that. I have 2 5946s. One from Cleveland PD and one from NYPD. The NYPD doesnt have the safety.

Browning Hipower and most of the clones.

Some M&Ps. I had a 357sig that had this feature. I didnt realize it when I bought it.

Hi Point, I think

Ruger LC9 and SR9. I dont know if its just an option or they all have it but I have seen them with this feature

Yugo Tokarev and M88

I remember reading somewhere that some agency (probably in Cali) uses Beretta 92s with mag disconnects. I dont know if its available to the public but its out there.

Star firestar has it.

My Browning M1910 pocket pistol has a magazine safety. That pistol was made long before the Hi-Power was designed.
My Colt Vest Pocket Automatic doesn't have one, but any of those pistols with a serial number higher than 141000 does.
The magazine safety was well understood long before the HP was designed.

Good to know.
Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks, I was coming back to add some info and saw you beat me to it. I should have said check CA guns. I believe most new models added to the roster after 06 should have them.

Browning BDA/Beretta 84
FN/Browning Hi-Powers
S&W 5906/6906

It's a useful feature in a single action auto when you want to carry with the hammer down - feels a lot safer dropping the mag before the hammer is lowered and safed. The trouble is that it also usually buggers up the trigger pull. The first 'trigger job' most new Hi-Power shooters do is trash the mag disconnect.

The new PX4 Storms actually have printed on the slide: WILL SHOOT WITHOUT MAGAZINE

Mag disconnects are a bad idea IMHO... it quite possibly got these two killed during the Corporal killings in Belfast. Check out at :40 seconds...half ejected mag...
