I'm looking at buying a 2001 model SAR1, when I was looking it over I pulled the charging handle back and it hung up when going back in unless I pulled it all the way back then let it go. The guy said he's had a few SARS and all of them have done that. He said the that regardless of where the magazine is from the charging handle stays open after the last bullet is shot. None of my other AKs do this, is what he is telling me true?

It's a great rifle. I paid $399+tax back in 2002 for my 2001 SAR1. Don't know what they go for nowadays. Amazing that nothing has needed replacement in all those rounds. Might add the dimple factor. That old school receiver is a plus for many people. The SAR 1 was the WASR of its day. All the AK snobs considered it inferior and made with reject military parts in Romania and further buggered by Century Arms in America. Mine has worked like a Swiss watch for thousands of rounds and can still hit the paper plate @ 100 yards all day and night. The WASR is a cheaper but every bit as reliable AKM. Can't lose either way.

The first AK I bought was a used SAR-1 (1999 model). It has the crudest fit and finish of any AK I own, but it has run flawlessly over the years (I have had it since 2007) with a variety of ammunition. The only issue one may have with the SAR-1 is trigger slap resulting from the crude, US-made FCG (I do not know who made it for Century). However, one can easily remedy this by swapping it out with a different FCG (I ended up putting a Tapco G2 in my SAR-1 around six years ago).

A price tag of $600.00 is a good deal on today's market.

My 2001 has had the Century FCG in it since 2002 when I bought it new. The first SAR 1 I bought (a 2000) had wicked trigger slap out of the box. Guess I was lucky with my Century FCG in the 2001 SAR 1. I believe Century manufactured the FCG hence the "C" stamped on all three parts of the FCG. Bought a Red Star FCG (like $90 bucks in the day) just in case, but sold it a few years ago. With over 15K through the 2001 I don't think I'll need a new FCG. But, man, did that 2000 hurt like hell. The trigger finger would sting the rest of the day.
