Keep us updated...I wish I would have got one of these before they dried up. Hopefully more are on the way.
I got one of the last ones in Dec. They told me in May they are expecting more.
Sweet ill have to start saving my pennies then. What has always stopped me from getting one is the mag situation. Those 223 bulgarian mags aren't cheap. Plus I like to keep at least 10 (or 50 if they are cheap) mags per weapon...

I have considered doing a Saiga 223 conversion then getting a AR mag well adapter, but idk if that would run that great.

23,070. Barrel showing noticeable throat erosion. Accuracy is only marginally affected. New extractor spring at 20,940 rounds after multiple failures to extract on magazine 698. Bulgarian finish is toast.

Pix? I'd like to see how well she survived.

edit: I went back to the beginning of the thread. I see you didn't have a digital camera and didn't wanna go through the hassle to photograph, scan, etc. Still, it'd be nice to see how well she's holding up, if you ever do get one

That set up looks great. However, I have a Ultimak rail for one of my SLR107UR's and that thing is a heat conductor..... Damn' thing heats right up after firing a couple magazines...... I actually lost accuracy when using the mini red dot. It is a real red dot too; not a knock off.

So.....Does the SLR106 in 5.56 function reliably? I've still got that 106UR available to me, and it sure is a nice rifle (as well as being a great form 1 candidate!)
Mine didn't, but others have had better luck.

The problem with mine was that the bottom left of the bolt would sometimes strike the rear right side of the left magazine feed lip. This would disrupt the cycling of the action resulting in various malfunctions. If you compare the width of the bottom of the Bulgarian bolt, it's significantly wider than other 5.56x45 (223Rem) bolts. There is no room for error. So if the rifle isn't made with everything perfectly straight, it can cause problems like I had.

I'll add my findings to the pot. There arent a lot of good threads on these 106's.

I have just under 1000rds through my 106FR. I have had two malfuntions, one of which is definetly ammuntion related. The rim broke off of the case and the rifle failed to extract. Second malfuntion, failure to extract but the rim was intact.

Ammo was TULA from walmart. Ammo seems ok, some cases appear to have a rough finish, and there is often excess copper around the neck of the case from when the bullet was seated during manufacture. I do beleive this ammo was to blame for both malfuntions. Those two are my only malfunctions in ANY AK platform.

Accuracy is great, recoil is extremley low. The rifle handles great, the folding stock is the best I have ever seen or used. It locks up with zero play. Rifle is also very light. Magazines are of exceptional quality.

I got mine for $650 from K-var which was a steal. These are great rifles, and I would buy another if the price wasn't so high now days.

My 6920 with a TA01 ACOG and a Geissele trigger will print 1 inch or better groups with the right ammo all day long. I won a carbine shoot with it last summer, and the only reason I did was the 100m and 300m scores were bolt action spot on.

Thanks for the write up. I'm eyballin a 106UR, and wondered if they function well in 5.56.
Take note of bold portions from my first post in this thread:
2. The rifle is roughly equivalent to an iron-sighted AR carbine in terms of accuracy. I'm getting 3-4 MOA rested 10-round groups with TAP training ammo. Again, comparable to an AR carbine. An Ultimak and Aimpoint T1 are on my immediate acquisition list, that should slim the already good group size down even more.
I don't shoot match-grade, I don't use magnified optics on carbines, and I'm shooting 10-round groups. I also stick to stock triggers on defensive use weapons. That you shoot 1" groups (presumably 3, perhaps 5 shot) using a modified rifle with a magnified optic is all fine and dandy, but my comparison was made apples-to-apples so to speak.

28680 rounds, ejector is starting to develop a slight anvil head. Beginning reconfiguration process for 106s, likely to go with a RS mount for the Micros and some sort of barrel clamp for the white lights.

Any malfunctions? How does the bore look?
Replaced extractor spring at around 20k rounds because of multiple failures to extract on one magazine. Throat gauges a 6, though I don't know for sure that it originally gauged a "0" because I didn't buy the rifle new, it had 1,700 rounds through it when I purchased the rifle. I didn't gauge it when I bought it either, but it is definitely showing noticeable wear, as is the muzzle.

No appreciable loss of accuracy has been noted, still runs 3-4 MOA 10-round groups of a rest.

Update and extractor spring info?

I know the carrier interchanges with a standard AKM carrier. I swapped out with a buddy's WASR 10 carrier and it ran fine. I checked it carefully before firing, of course. The shape of the cam channels in the carriers are identical.

ETA: The bolt carriers are NOT identical. There is a relief cut made for the left magazine feedlip on the SLR 106 carrier. Otherwise, AKM carriers are compatible.

I have a 106 FR and would like to know if any other mags beside the bulgarian will work and how well? I have talked to Definitive arms about a converssion to AR mags and am on there list to get this done, maybe. Theres no set time frame its when they get there R and D done.

Beryl mags work great. They are not quite as thick as the Circle 10s, but lock in fine and feed flawlessly.
