Are there differences between an AKM and AK-47 bolt?

Hello again,

I'm sorry to keep bothering you gentlemen with questions that I wish I could answer for myself.... This forum is such a wonderful resource.

Anyway, the question at hand. I have a couple of Lancaster Ak-47 receivers, and I bought a couple of East German Ak-47 bolts from K-var to go with them. Problem is, they won't even begin to turn to lock. Seems they can't get past the bullet guide, or something else is preventing them from even beginning to turn. Is it possible that the K-var East German Ak-47 bolts won't fit the (from what I was told by Lancaster) AKM style milled reciever? Seems it's possible that there are generational differences that I'm just not aware of between the AK-47 and AKM bolt dimensions.

Or, is this just a fitting issue. Before I break out the tools and start removing metal I wanted to ask some experts.

Thanks in advance!

considering what lancaster has been putting out the past few years, i would be completely unsurprised if it were just a fitment issue.

i'm not personally aware of any differences, but take that as worth less than the .02 it is.

It's a fitting issue. I bought one of those bolts from K-Var as well. It's an AKM bolt.

I compared the locking lug on the EG bolt to a bolt from a (probably) unfired Romy G kit. The lug on the EG bolt is 0.430" and the Romy is 0.407". Material has to be removed from the rear of the locking lug. If you haven't done it before, consider letting a pro do the fitting for you, as removing material will affect headspace. If you go too far, the bolt is junk.
