Are there any parts commonality between the AKM and AK-103?

I was asking this because I was wondering if any components of the 103 were identical to the AKM. Or if they were modified or redesigned in any way.

The AK-103 is identical to the AK-74M except in chambering. I do not believe any parts of either will interchange with AKM. The AKM furniture will fit an AK-103 even though they are somewhat different in detail and materials.

What about the bolt?

The bolt is completely different, it is like the 74 bolt, small diameter stem verus large, and the extractor is shrouded by the bolt body. The Trunnions are slightly different length and the bullet guide is a narrow plate and does not have the ramp that acts as the primary turning guide for the bolt, that is done by a rivit that comes in through the outside off the reciever. The turning rivit was done so that Saiga models could be built without any bullet guide and still get the bolt to start turning. The turning rivit was just simply kept as a production step wheather or not the reciever was going to be a Saiga or military weapon since it works for both. The bolt carrier is straight out of the AK-74. Actual military trigger groups are 74 style but an AKM group would still work, so I guess that is one part that can interchange but in our civilian world most use a U.S. semi-auto group that will work in any AK. The gas tube could interchange but the correct tube uses the anti-rattle spring/washer. most everything else is visible from the outside like gas block and sight base/muzzlebrake etc. even the cleaning rod is a small diameter small head AK-74 rod and the cleaning kit brush is 7.62 size with the smaller 74 size threads. Here is a page of Forum member Tantals "Avtomats in Action" site, it has an indepth discription of year to year changes of the AK-74, and can be used to see what all the AK-100 series looks like, (especially towards the end) http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/variants.html . You should also read the entire site, it is phenominal for AK information and will occupy you for hours and hours.

So would you say that the 74 bolt and the 103 are identical and interchangeable?

No, they look identical but the face size is different, and the extractor curve is wider. The bolt carriers are the same for late 74Ms and 103.

So I guess the only differences between the two rifles are barrels, chambers, bolts, and flash suppressors.
Rear sight block will be different for different trajectory.

Receiver will be different to accept the different magazines and have slightly different rails.

They probably just borrowed those characteristics from the AKM.
