Yugo Barrel Question

596 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  my-rifle
I know a Yugo barrel is not chrome lined (and I have used the search function and read all the threads on this topic).

I have read that in addition to resisting the corrosive properties of corrosive primers/ammo, chrome line barrels also have a longer life.

My question is if one does not use corrosive ammo, and cleans his gun regularly what is the functional life of a non-chrome barrel? Would I get approx. 500k shots out of a Yugo (non-chromed), and 750k out of a Bulgarian (chromed) for example (these are completely random number to give an example)?

I love my Yugo, but this seems to be the only drawback to having it is a primary weapon should the shtf/paw go down.

Thanks

barrel life

My God man! 500,000 750,000 rounds? I would love for a barrel to last even 50 to 75 thousand rounds. Better yet, I would like to be able to afford to buy 50 to 75K. Not being a ballistics or metalurgy expert by any stretch of the imagination, I would think that if a Yugo barrel was taken care of and not worn out at the muzzle with a cleaning rod, it should probably last 25,000 rounds or so. How much would bore chrome add to that? I don't know, maybe 5,000 or a bit more?

Thanks for the input. I honestly had no idea how many rounds so I just put in a completely out there random number. So 25,000 rounds. I agree with you that I do not plan on shooting 25,000 rounds, but I figured since these were made for combat that in a war a lot of ammo would be fired ... especially since these guns had full auto.

Thanks for the input man.

You're quite welcome. Ofcourse, this is just my estimate. Another, more knowledgeable member may pipe up with more correct info.
The word on the street says the expected barrel life before accuracy opens up "significantly" is about 30,000 rounds for a non chrome lined barrel. It's doubtful that you'll fire that many rounds through any one rifle in your lifetime, so think of the barrel life as infinite.
