WOT...Guitar Heads question......

Hey Guitar heads, what do you guys think of the Fender Mustang for my son? We have been looking at the American Standard Strat, and SG Cherry, but since he has an Epihone SG, I have been trying to get him to try something else. Any experience with the Mustang?

eta...I know nothing about guitars.....

I don't know a lot either... I play the drums. BUT a flying V is totally metal.
I'd buy an LTD brand guitar. LOTs of value for your $$, especially for under 1k. You can find a set-thru (basically like a neck thru) for cheap.

I had a Gibson Les Paul, LTD EX-400 (Explorer style) and an ESP M-II . I loved that LTD guitar. Can't go wrong for the money. Most guitar shops carry them, or you can order them offline if you're willing to get it "set up."
Mustang has a very jangly Fender/Grunge vibe. I wouldn't mind one!
Re:

I would go for a Jazz Master instead, something made in the USA.

You know whats really hot right now and a huge seller made in the USA. They just came out last week for 999 list so you could get one for around 800...

Also Gibson quality is hit and miss around the 1000 dollar price range so you would have to play one in the store before you buy.

ETA I just bought one of these for myself.
If you want your kid to be the collest kid in school get him one of these they come in tons of different colors.

Re:

The Jazz Master is a much more versatile sound wise guitar than the Mustang so he can play everything from metal to country on one electric. The Mustang leaves alot to be desired in terms of tonal diversity.

Actually, we are going to the Gibson Factory August 2nd, I just want him to be exposed, and verse on playing different guitars for different sounds. The Mustang to me had a very crisp, West Coast "sound" to it. (ie grunge, and 60's surf).

Then have him play as many different guitars as he can get his hands on that they will sell at the Gibson factory. Once you find a Gibson thats a keeper its for life. Make sure its the one that he actually plays dont let them order you the same one because it wont be. Every Gibson is different.

The new Fender stuff is consistant quality wise and they make a overall good product but if you can find that one Gibson that suits you there is nothing like it...
If your son is used to a Gibson/Epi I'd stay with that. Most Fenders have a 25.5" scale while Gibsons/Epi's have 24 3/4" scale. I think the Mustangs and Jaguars have the 24 3/4" scale also but hell, I'd still go SG given the option and any competent shop can install a pull pot that will split the humbucker pickup to a single coil and get the single coil sound like a Fender.

All this said, have you looked at the PRS guitars? They are perfect IMO.
