Who's Building Polish Underfolders Right Now?

1476 Views 22 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Tapeo1
I just finished one, and as I look through the boards I don't see much chatter about them. Have ya'll given up on the Polish underfolders? My Polish wood is soaking in lacquer thinner right now to clean the soaked cosmoline out of it, but once that's done I think it's going to look really nice. I really love them, as they're so well machined. I thought they were still available, but the lack of discussion of them is making me wonder if they're all gone. Anyone?

I just finished building one. I've got two more to build. Well, maybe I'll sell one off and finish the other.
I bought mine back when Dan's Ammo and the BBQ guy from AKfiles had them. After that they seemed to be a lot less common. It has been over a year, maybe close to two years now. I built up mine several months ago on a NDS receiver, turned out very nice I believe. I still need to get it refinished, can't decide between park/paint route or the older style bluing. The kit was painted, but I have handled old blued Polish guns and really like the look. Here is pic:

I've got one cued up on my list projects. Then I'm on to that one's big sis with a fixed stock.

Hand guards are in the laquer thinner (thanx Z-recto), park tank will be built next week, gunkote is on the way.

doing either option yourself?

I don't have the equipment or skills to do the refinish myself, but based on the (not great) quality of some of the work I have had done I am considering changing that. I figure an airbrush/hvlp gun and a spray finish might be the best way to get a really nice finish. The cost of bluing equipment and the polishing skills are a bit daunting.

I am surprised to hear folks are soaking the cosmoline out of their handguards. I figure that is a pretty genuine finish, like the color, and hadn't thought to change it. Of course if cosmo will break down the wood over time maybe I should try to get it off. It does seem to come out with "hand traffic" as I use the rifle, I figured it would reach a nice natural patina at some point.

Well, I have a spankin' new stock set for my fixed Polish build so I want the forearms on my u-folder to match. "Sexy Polish twins." When you compare the two, there is real difference. Z-recto's tip was a thinner soak for 1 week, then minwax puritan pine and colonial maple 1:1 for the stain, followed by a linseed oil application. I'm giving it a go.

I plan to park/paint myself. Either with brownell's bake-on gunkote or a duracoat semi-gloss black. 9:1 color/hardener. I've seen both and they look sharply colse to original polish paint.
I have two or three Polish kits from 3-4 years ago when they were widely available. I just ahven't gotten around to building anything lately.
If anyone is going to build a fixed stock, i need a polish underfolder assembly with a milled rear trunnion...
Here's the one I built last week. I've still got the original Polish furniture for it but wanted to see how it looked with something different. Russian UHG, reshaped Maadi LHG, and US PG were all refinished by Z_Recto a few years ago.

I'm waiting for expcustom and his new flats.

Hey Al, what type of finish is on your handguards and grip. I have a new unfinished set.
I got a 1984 kit from GUNDOC in a trade a while back. Beautiful kit. I need to demil it and order a receiver for it soon.
I have an unfired 84 kit I need to get a receiver for and another previously unfired 85 kit that needs to come off the crappy ITM receiver and go onto a Nodak itself. Still want one more kit for a fixed stock build too...
Finish is factory. If I had to try to replicate, i would try something like tung oil, something that penetrates the wood and doesn't leave much build up...
If anyone wants to sell a polish akms parts kit, let me know. I am in the market for one but can't seem to find very many.

I've got one that I'm thinking of selling. Give me until tomorrow night (Wednesday) to take some pics and I'll send them to you in a PM.
Thanks for the leads guys. I'll be waiting for Tapeo1's PM.
What finish did you put on the metal on this one? It looks sort of like bluing, but I can't tell.

It's GunKote in AK black. The lighting kinda makes it look a little bluish in the picture but it's really not.
