When were bulged handguards introduced?

In what general time frame did the russians start using the bulged handguards instead of the smooth ones? Was it with the introduction of the AKM or after then? It's a simple question that I just can't find an answer to or decied where to post it.

With the first AKM... 1960 I believe is the date.
