OK, I have the list here and have highlighted the ones I believe apply to the VZ58:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

That is 15 by my count, meaning the gun needs 5 U.S. made parts, right?

I don't think it has a hammer per se, unless the striker mechanism counts.

Any comments are appreciated!

There is still a question as to whether or not the VZ's have a barrel extension. Yes, there IS something there... but if it's welded according to BATF specs? It becomes part of the barrel.

Personal note: I LOVE that you excluded Hammer :) I, too, have been wondering if I could get away with that one - as the VZ contains a STRIKER, and the regulated parts preamble is VERY specific in ruling out all other section definitions :)

It could work, except for one thing: I can find no industry credible definition for "striker" and "hammer" that point out any technical difference. If we could find one? A sound argument could be made that the 922R definition of "hammer" does not apply to the VZ :)

It say Kalashnikov and variants. We all know that the VZ is not a variant, but several publication point it out as one. So they will probably use that documentation to verify their claim.

they will not publish a list it will make it too easy if you wish to import stuff they'll give you a yea or nay but since these rifles have many features they look for (short barrel, ability to accept high capacity military magazines, seperate pistol grip, threaded barrel, bayonet lug) and it only takes one they have unquestionably determined this rifle is unimportable under setion 925(d) and therefore subject to section 922r

Don't get a barrel extension confused with a muzzle attachment. Barrel extensions are on the breech end of the barrel. Most common are barrel extensions on heavy machine guns (like the M2). The barrel screws into a barrel extension, and that is what the armorers use to adjust headspace. Here is a link that details the parts of an M2. Scroll down to see a drawing and description of a barrel extension:

So no, the VZ-58 doesn't have a barrel extension, it would need a longer muzzle attachment (permanently attached of course) to bring the length of the barrel from boltface to muzzle to 16".

Good post, I think that has been misapplied for too long..
