You can also see the Taser, they also had Glock 17 but they're covered by the jackets.

The one with the MP5 with holo sight told me:

* They get 4 weeks basic training, 2 of which is at the range.
* After the basic they get once a month range time
* No personal use of firearms - i.e. they don't join gun clubs (and these guns are illegal for civilians anyway)
* The Glock 17 are going to be discontined and they'll carry aTaser in lieu of pistol (I forget what model he said but it's the latest 2 shot model) and SIG carbine - I think he was talking about the SIG MCX... however he was the most knowledgeable about firearms and he didn't have any in depth knowledge. He was surprised that the MP5 is still being made in Turkey and Pakistan, for instance.
* The G36 was loaded with soft points "to reduce over-penetration". All the officers spoke of concern for over-penetration (which is nice I suppose).

First pic, guy on left. Two leg holsters? I'm guessing one is a taser?

Also in other pics he looks a little stoned! :)

Get rid of Glocks for Tasers! Makes perfect sense!!

Yes, they also had batons and CS spray. They weren't fans of the CS spray, noting it was difficult to use without spraying yourself or a colleague in fight. Also CS isn't effective against somebody who's very drunk or drugged or is used to it (such as military personel).

It was pretty cold. Also I wouldn't be surprised if they'd been out for some beers the night before.

Actually it's not so crazy. The policemen get relatively little training with the pistols and they're carrying carbines anyway - why do they need a pistol. It's not as if they're ever alone and without backup. Taser for "non-lethal" use and carbine if things get too exciting. It actually makes sense I think.

I get what you're saying but if it's bad enough that I'm (as a police officer) armed with a carbine I would definitely want a handgun. Many things can happen. A rifle can have a catastrophic failure, it can be hit by a bullet/s and be put out of action, it can jam, it can run out of ammo. On top of that a tazer is limited in range, is not always effective, can be defeated with something like a chest rig or anything thick/er.

Thanks for the pics though! Always cool to see what other countries cops carry

eotech batteries will be dead or needing turned on and powered up.... blink blink blink... too many Cheetos and jelly donuts. the cameras all day must put the zap on em. not very camera shy are they? look mommy im all grown up I gotta real machinegun now and people take pictures of me now all day and im famous...any real cop would be more alert these days at a us embassy one would think.

I tried too many times to get pics of cops toting seriously awesome and rare hardware in asia and almost 100 percent of the time I was shown how to not take pics of faces and guns and how to take a few steps back. at least til they met me and chatted and most the time still no good pics. kinda smart for a cya perspective. these guys will pull down their pajamas for another publicity stunt. fatsy and goofy are my favorite. they look so...hardened and streetwise. donut embassy elite reaction battalion shock troops. goofy has a tattoo on his buttocks...you guessed it! its a donut emblazoned over the us embassy.

I was surprised that there weren't US Marines guaring the embassy and that the security wasn't more intimidating looking at least. They certainly gave no indication that this was other than routine and tedious.

The US Embassy is due to leave Grosvenor Square and move to the new "diplomatic village" that's being built somewhere in London. That will be much more heavily fortified no doubt. The current building will be turned into a casino by the Saudis (who by the looks of things own most of London by now).

Wandering around London there didn't seem to be any terror paranoia. There are certainly way less armed guards around London than there are at any random place in the Philippines... the policemen were a bit bemused when I told them where I live in the Philippines there's an armed guard on the steel gates you have to go through to enter the subdivision.

It's all true but remember these are (believe it or not) specialist armed police and they are seldom in a situation when there aren't at least half a dozen of them. Just like soldiers mostly have only have a rifle or carbine and no backup gun because it's kind of pointless when you're working as a team. More importantly to me it's sensible simply because they get so little opportunity to train with their pistols. Carbines are much easier to hit with for an inexperienced shooter (specially the MP5 on semi).

There's a shift in the UK to switch to PDW type weapons from pistols and use Tazers where the opponent doesn't have a firearm. This makes sense for how the police operate in the UK, especially with the limited range time they get and no opportunity to do dry fire practice or join a gun club and practise in their own time.

I take it this is some kind of buffer or rate reducer? Any MP5 experts know?

So why don't they train with handguns?
My guess is the expense. Plus the British govt just doesn't like handguns.
