Undimpled Under Folders?

438 Views 17 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Bullitt0088
Anyone have any good clear pictures of rifles like this? Any variance in dust covers, selectors, front end parts, etc?

I ask because I have a nearly complete under folder kit I've been accumulating for a year. I finally managed to find a Chinese barrel trunnion. It looks like I waited too long to order a receiver. Childers no longer has the dimpled option available.

Great thread. I'm not sure why Childers would stop making the Dimpled Magwell Underfolder Receiver. The thing that has me intrigued, I have never seen a Stamped Chinese AK without a Dimpled Magwell Receiver before. I'm not an Expert on AK's, so I'm dying to hear the answer on this one. That's the Great thing about this Forum, something new and different comes up all the time, however there is always a Member who has the Answer

Pics of spikers sans dimples aren't too hard to find. The under folder version is, in my limited experience, another story.

Supposedly it has to do with their Polish vendor. The company in Poland is unable to provide the proper pattern at this time. It is unknown if Childers can source a similar product from a US source.

The slab-side receivers I believe are an earlier variant and many of those went to the Chinese Navy (as you can see in the photo), I don't know about underfolder variants. That being said, you could have a scrubbed slab-side receiver remarked with Albanian selectors for an Ash-78 or 82 clone. The Albanians never went to a dimpled receiver, I don't think.

Maybe I need to get the Vickers AK picture book.

Another view of the under folder shown in the above video.

There is a member on this site that has a Chinese AKM with a dimple on one side and none on the other. And they says Century builders drank too much. :D :D :D

James River Armory assembled at least a few non-dimpled guns. Was this because the receiver stubs were the same pattern? I assume so.

I've seen that picture several times and never even noticed the lack of dimples, lol.

No, JRA was smoking something on these guns. While non-dimpled T56-1 rifles do exist, they are very early production rifles. By the 17mil series (the series that all of the JRA kits seem to have come from) dimples were in place at Arsenal 66. A great source to observe this is by reviewing the European deact postings - there are a large amount of 17mil series shown there.

I also wouldn't get my hopes up on a non-dimpled Childers receiver. I have been waiting since the beginning of the year for them to finish and ship mine, all the while my Albanian kit is gathering dust.

What arsenal is your kit from? (Please post pictures if you are unsure). The most common 56-1 kits in the US are going to come from 56, 66 and occasionally 386.

The "kit" in question is a mishmash of mostly MAK90 parts.

Ideally I'd like a dimpled receiver for a more appropriate look. But it won't really matter since the gun will be asembled from a variety of Chinese parts.

I just so happen to have a spare dimpled Childers that I will never use if you want it. Chinese domestic selector markings.

I emailed Childers over the weekend and got a reply yesterday. They do plan on selling the dimpled underfolder receivers again. They're saying they will be back on the website in about a month.

Here's a bit of info provided by member Machak to my inquiry about pics of undimpled Chinese guns:

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any Chinese AKs without mag dimples.

However, Albania made Chinese pattern AKs without mag dimples. Here are some pictures from my friend Miles: An Albanian ASh78-1 Kalashnikov in Kabul -

Here is a picture of an underfolder from Reddit: https://preview.redd.it/19boimzmzfj...ed&s=b48ad3bc282e5c5a3a72cb1b5c471096727e0cfa

Hope it helps.

Best regards, Vladimir.

Here is my factory built "undimpled" Type 56. I want to stress that this rifle was a factory fluke but will give you the idea of what an undimpled Type 56 would look like.

Here is an early Arsenal 66 built undimpled rifle but the details are a little tough to make out because it is in video format:
