Type 2 Unique Components

I’m in the process of piecing together a T2 like you are, I’m going for a 1953 style which has the most T2 specific parts of any year.

Here’s the specifics I’ve found from my research. It should be very accurate, but if anyone more knowledgeable than me sees a mistake please let me know.

By 1952 almost all of the Type 1 parts were replaced. For Late 52 - Early 54, you will want:
  • T3 Gas tube
  • T1/T2 Handguard Retainer (sling loop much wider than an AKM)
  • T2 Gas block (smaller than T1, but no sling loop and flatter face than T3)
  • T2 FSB (Like a T3 but without the taper on the bottom edge sides of the big hole)
  • Single groove muzzle nut
  • Knurled Head cleaning rod
  • Hardwood Handguards
  • Hardwood T2 Pistol Grip
  • T2 RSB (No taper on the rear top edge, gas lever only has one stamp ridge towards the top of it)
  • T1/T2 Dust Cover
  • T2 Receiver
  • T2 Stock
  • T2 Barrel (I think a T3 will work, just won’t be “clone correct”. Not totally sure on that though. The biggest difference will be journal lengths at the handguard retainer and gas block.)
  • T3 FCG pins
  • T2 Stock Attachment Block (Also called the Stock boot or knuckle)
  • T3 Recoil spring
  • T3 Bolt, Carrier and gas piston
  • T2 Grip
  • T2 Safety (looks like a T3, but without the top finger pad/ridge)
  • T2 mag catch/trigger guard (Thicker steel than T3, and the lever face has angled cuts on the side)
  • T2 Grip Nut (only has 2 rivet holes. You can get away with using a T3 though, it will fit)
  • Any milled T3 style FCG should work
That should be all the important parts, but if I missed anything let me know.

By late 1954, all of the barrel components were the same as the T3. Only the following parts were still T2 style:
  • Dust Cover
  • Receiver
  • Barrel
  • Furniture
  • Stock Attachment Boot/Knuckle
  • Maybe the mag catch/trigger guard? Not sure on this one

I can’t really say anything about the differences in Other nation’s T3 parts vs Russian. I don’t know enough about the little differences to tell.

Here’s 2 good posts with a 1953 T2. The one with the AKM has the wrong grip but is correct aside from that.
