Just got a SAR 1 and want to thread the muzzle.
Have any of you all attempted to do this your self? There used to be a thread in the arfcom EE for renting a threading tool but I can't seem to find the guys ad anymore. I am not too mech. inclined although I can do stuff like replace FCGs in AKs and such.
Is this a DYI or send off job?
Thanks in advance.

I got mine from here:

http://preciseinnovationsllc.com/old%20 ... ngkits.htm

This operation was much easier than I had anticipated. Once I got the die and pilot set up, it cut the threads like a hot knife through butter. It was almost too easy. Just go slow and follow the directions very closely. They will tell you that, if you start to encounter resistance, STOP! I was speeding right along and by the time I bottomed out on the pilot and the die stopped turning, I had already got the pilot stuck. It was my own fault for going too fast. Like I said, it's almost too easy.

If you should go this route and need assistance, just make a post or drop me a PM. I would be glad to help out.

14x1M LH kit is what you want. Kit is $63 plus S&H

The only thing I have to add would be use some cutting oil. (pipe threading)
DIY stores have it relatively cheap.

You might be able to find the Die and Tat cheaper from other places, the die handle you could borrow from someone who has a die set if you don't have one already. Do a search on threading SARs I have posted before IIRC Dies are about $19 and MidwayUSA had 7.62 TATs.

"ATAK, Inc." also rents the threading kit for $23 shipped to you and you pay to ship it back to him. The kit contains the 14x1LH die, die handle, threading oil, both 5.45 and 7.62 Thread Alignment Tools (TAT's), and instructions. You would use the 7.62 TAT. I am currently waiting for the kit so that I can thread the barrel on my SAR-1.

If you are interested, you can go to this thread to contact him: http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showthread.php?t=317428
