Im planning on doing a Khyber pass style build. When it comes to the receiver can i use a side folding ak47 receiver or do i need one that specifically says "Khyber pass"? is it a marketing ploy or is this a legit difference?
Thanks

Khyber Pass is not a marking it's a type of build named after the area they're built in

Khyber pass rifles were rifles assembled from whatever parts were available. There were no factory versions of these rifles.

When something would break or wear out they'd fix it with whatever was on hand. Here's a bolt action AK

There are several AK incarnations out there but the only true "Khyber Pass" rifle is indeed the Bolt action AK. With the proper graffiti otherwise it's just a lame imitation.

It is just a style of modifying a gun that is all-usually with the most gaudy modifications. Some of the styles have changed a little since 2002 or before but they still for the most part look the same. In the original days many of the modifications were to RPK's and converting weapons to AKSU's and the occasionally folding stock added to the AK but many just had the stocks sawed off or removed.

The Pakistani's in the Peshawar Valley area aka Khyber Pass have been building one-off and cloned and modified firearms for a couple hundred years.
In the early days many were copies or parts from British bolt guns and pistols.
More recently the "Ruski" firearms from the Afghanistan border and the Russian fighting in the late 70's and earl 80's.

The iconic triangle folder was the often copied folding buttstock style on a 7.62 or other caliber AK action.
But other styles and stocks were used and even milled copies etc.

Most have tribal or other spiritual adornments and such., and often show a lot of carry wear.

There are "as new" models often called the "tourist models".

A fun build journey as the fit, finish and treatment can be rather rough and imaginative.

Review the photos of the originals in this forum and the USA built clones for ideas on what look you prefer.
