Sar 2 Threading

Guys,

I have acquired a Sar 2. I absolutely do not want to put the AIMS 74 FSB on it being that it is threaded to 22mm. I wanted to know if I can get the barrel threaded to 14x1 LH or possibly attach a standard AK 74 FSB. 14X1 LH would be better for me being that I have a bunch of muzzle devices and adapters I could put on it. Please help me out.

My SAR 2 barrel was to small for a standard AK74 FSB. You won’t be able to thread to 14 x 1 LH the barrel is to thin. Measure your barrel, you may be able to thread 1/2 x 28 RH? Depending on what your barrel measures. Could possibly knurl or sleeve to get a standard 74 FSB to fit.
Back when I got mine, someone was custom making press on thread adapters in 22mm and 24mm. Sorry I don’t recall who, maybe it was JMAC.

hmmmm, 1/2 x 28 rh might be a good idea being that they make adapters that got to 24mm.

I see that you also have the detent pin in but i dont see where the pin is that holds it in place. I am going to be threading it 1/2x28 because there does not seem to be enough on the barrel for 14x1. Could you tell me how you installed the detent pin on the fsb without the 2 pin?

Yes, I used the AK 74 detent and spring. I installed the spring and then the detent and pressed on my adapter.

AK74 detent pin is not retained the same way as the AKM. The pin is sold and doesn’t have the notch like the AKM detent pin. If I remember correctly, it may not be the same length?
Normally the detent pin is installed first from the rear until it hits the rear face of the threaded block. Then the spring is added. The spring and detent are held in place by a pin that goes cross ways towards the rear. One side of that pin is flat the other gets smashed with a ball bearing to spread the end out.
Since you’re using a thread adapter that should take the place of the threaded block. You may need to add a alignment notch if it doesn’t have one already.
If yours still has the rear cross pin. Install the spring and then the detent. Go ahead and try the AKM detent pin and see if it will work. If the pin doesn’t have enough tension on it after you have screwed on the adapter. Try a longer spring from something like a ball point pin.

Of course be careful. Nothing is holding that pin in except your finger while you screw on the adapter. It will go flying across the room!

Someone years ago had a idea of holding the detent in with a roll pin so it couldn’t shoot out across the room.
I can’t remember if they used a AKM detent pin with the notch or modified a 74 pin with a notch? It used the same concept of the AKM design.
They drilled a small hole at the bottom of the pin channel for a roll pin in the area circled. That will stop the detent from going to far forward or rearward.
That part takes a little trial and error to get the right length of notch correct.
Just holding the detent in while screwing in the adapter is the easiest way to do it, IMO

GMV96, the pin and spring are just inserted from the front of the fsb. I’m trying to figure out a way to keep it in place. The muzzle brake is 1/2x28 threaded , so it just screws on. If you use the adapter ,it will hold the pin in place. Hey, I just had an idea. I’ll let you know how it works. It’s off to the shop. Dan

By golly it worked. I don’t know why I never thought of this before instead of fighting with the pin. I reduced the diameter of the front third of the pin and then staked the front sight base. Worked like a charm. One more option to consider. The pin is not going anywhere. Dan
