Has there ever been a Russian or Soviet counterpart to the M249, i.e. something like a shrunken PKM in 5.45 x 39?

Thanks.

No. The PKM is a heavy machine gun deployed on a tripod or mounted on buildings or vehicles. The RPK is the SAW for the Russians. Hey, the SAW has a 100 round belt, the RPK has a 100/75 round drum.

The RPK is a magazine fed weapon. I think you may be referring to the RPD, which is a belt fed 7.62x39 weapon.

No, I mean RPK. The RPD was phased out of service in the 60's. The RPK is the current SAW. Saw stands for Squad Automatic Weapon, it doesn't have to be belt fed to be a SAW.

the closest counterpart is a RPK,...although not belt fed like the M-249's,.
it is used in the same mannor,..the RPK-47 can use either a drum or
magazine,.. but the RPK-74 is magazine only

mainly my M-249 was left up on a secondary mount on the gun ring of a
HMMWV,..rarely did i have to lug it around,..but when i did ,.. oh god did i
hate that heavy ass M-F'er

now the M-249's also come with a newer short barrel and collapsable
stock (stock has been out for a while),.. heres the only clear picture i
have of the short barrel,.. M-249 short barrel,. knights arm. RIS,.. -the bi
pods,.and it has the normal stock on it.

nice fire power,.. but like i said before heavy as fuck to carry around,..
the 200rd boxes liked to fall off and break (cheap plastic),..the 100rd
pouches liked to twist and the belts would break,..however the 200rd
pouches i got off some of the 82nd guys did ok

heres another pic of us giving our medic a quick class and walk thru on
fireing the SAW,.. you can barely see the colapsable stock between his
shoulder and wrist

now a RPK chopped down like this would be nice,...but thats why they
have the AK-104's and such

There are Para SAWs, there was an article on them on Shotgun News a few months back. Isn't it like a 14.5" or 13" barrel? Gotta be brutal on the ears...

The PKM is a medium MG, sorry.

 holy shit!,.. thats what im talking about,...a chopped down 7.62x54R!,.... fuck i want one.

lol,..i like where he put his PM,... cant ever really describe what a ass pain it is to try and move around in your PBA

the short barrel is not any worse than the regular length SAW barrel,.. and if it was it doesnt make a diffrence,.. you dont set foot off the FOB with out every last lousy piece of protection,...includeing ear plugs.

+1 on that Cruzie, I carried a saw for 17 days in MCT. Everywhere I went....I was all excited when I first got it, But a couple of miles into our first hump.....My ideas changed....although it was very fun to shoot. Humping patrols and "Rifle PT" were no fun with it........Then I was a road guard on an 8 mile hump with the damn thing.......But looking back it was all fun.......

oh god,.. me and the other SAW gunner im my squad hated weapons
PT,.. we where no little guys,..and we can run like the wind normally,...
but wearing the body armor w/ plates and carring the SAW's,..shit we
never had a chance to keep up,..

i remember our PLT Sgt wanted to show us up,..he took my SAW and ran
with it for a bit,..after about a block he threw it back at me,.. told me
"get this heavy bitch off'a me!" and took his M-4 back,...that made my
morring worth while

Nothing like getting in trouble as a squad and having to hold your rifles out in front of you...........Your always the first one to lower it and get everybody yelled at.....But nobody in my squad ever said anything to me about it.......I woulda just told them to try it for themselves

Back on topic.
I saw a PKM at the gunshow today for 4400. Great looking gun. I would have to say thats the closest thing to the saw....Belt fed and takes the same round as the standard infantry weapon!

Grass is always greener..... Until you have to hump around a heavy ass SAW, then fuck the grass and the guy who assigned it to you ..

I always thought a plain jain M16A2 was perfect for all around carry and travel, obviously not ideal for getting in and out of any truck.

Belt fed weapons are nice but then you are carrying the weight of the belt plus the weight of the rounds and the box the belt is shoved into. I can see why the Russians phased out the RPD for the RPK. The Bulgarians make an RPK in 5.56 as well. Honestly with a Beta mag your M4 becomes like a saw if not at least lighter as well but the damn plastic is so cheap. I wish the Bulgarians would come out with a 5.56 drum for their AK's.
