refinishing my forearms.

Anyone have experience/ideas/suggestions for home refinishing?

Do these hand guards turn color over time from heating up?

I'm taking Z-recto's tip for getting the cosmo out of some other (Polish) forearms. -thought I’d go ahead and do something about the shit brown Bulgi paint that was flaking off of my krink guards while I'm at it.

I'd like to either go with a good looking stain/varnish or perhaps a close match to the original paint but with something more durable.

Might try this old recipe:

I had Gary, at overland refinish mine I hated that baby poop brown finish. Now if I ever get it I will post a pic of the completed rifle.

are they solid or laminated??
Mine are the laminate type. Not the cool wide ply though. The laminated layers are super thin. I was hoping for more grain to show off.

I definitely want a clear coat shiny finish rather than the linseed oil look. not sure on the stain though.
just use shellac, or tung oil. follow the directions on the can.

Shellac on these

Very nice finish on those. I only wish I could go that route.

Unfortunately after a closer inspection, I've found mine to be mismatched. Laminate upper, hardwood lower. Perhaps that's why they painted them. If I can’t trade mine off for a laminate lower, I’ll most likely paint them a more durable shit brown.

That's how most Bulgarian AKS74U's come, with the laminate upper and hardwood lower, painted baby-poo brown.
preemptive
Here's what I got out of shellac. Really wish I had a laminate lower instead. Damn this pic got really pixelated after the resize.

I might sand these down and repaint, or perhaps redo with thinner coats.
There's a little bit of grime stain on these that was missed with the original sanding. Shellac really brings out the shit along with the good stuff.

you could add a little tint to the shellac.
Anybody have an idea how much Z-Recto will charge to refinish a set of these? How can I get in touch with him?

Trying to refinish those that you snagged for $50? Bitter because I was seconds too late.
I snagged second pair a bit later for $60 from here.
