Buddy just got his first AK... an M70. Upon sighting in today, we had to drift the front sight post over too far to the side, and now the front post elevation tool won't fit over the post. He'd like to have the front post more centered.

Upon inspection the front block doesn't appear to be canted. I know that the preferred method is punching or pressing out the front sight pins (left to right), knocking the front sight over and reinstalling the pins (might necessitate redrilling the holes a tad larger and using larger pins).

However, is it possible or even advisable to chock the barrel in a vise and try tapping the front sight over a bit, before we have to remove pins and redrill anything?

If you are talking about the front sight block, then no, it is definitely not advisable. You do not want to shear the pins off or crack the FSB. Spray some good penetrating oil on the area and let it sit a day or so, then tap the pins out and redrill and install larger pins.
