receiver cover pops loose on AK-47

I have an AK-47 made by Inter-Ordinance. The receiver cover doesn't fit tight, the rear of the bolt spring pushes the cover back; where the thumb button protrudes through the rear of the receiver. It seems like the cover is too short i.e. it doesn't fit snug in the front where it fits under the rear sight. Any clues as to how to correct this?

when putting the dust cover back on, make sure that you first slide it underneath the trunion, then radially bring it down posterior and HIT IT to make it fit.

Perhaps it just SEEMS that its short, but it's supposed to be that way.

The front to rear trunnion spacing may be a bit out of spec.., too distant. But a fix that can work is to take a pair of channel locks or vice grips and gently bend the very lower rear edge of the receiver cover to the rear. Go gently and bow it out a little all along the rear vertical edge. Go slow and not crazy. This will often give the little extra forward movement to loc into the rear sight base detent and stay locked.

I must agree with the thought that the receiver cover is too short. I took it out again last weekend and shot it more. The cover didn't pop up this time, but it seems that if the cover was about 3/16" longer, it would fit snug against the rear of the receiver. I plan to carry it back to the dealer and see what they say, before I do any bending or mods.

If you can tell, there is a pretty good space behind the cover, enough that you can see the screw that goes into the stock. Even when you cycle the bolt back, it starts to come loose.

I got a new replacement cover from I.O. today, and guess what? It's exactly the same size as the original. I believe the rear trunion is set too far, as Surly and Turbothis both stated. I emailed I.O. and I'll see what they say. The dealer where I bought it said he would swap the gun out, but he doesn't have any more in stock, so it could be months before he gets any, if he gets any more at all.

I imagine I would have to break the gun down in order to weld a strip onto the rear trunion.

Now that I have a spare cover, I may try bending it gradually to see if I can make up the gap. It's short a good 1/4", so the cover may bow out in the middle and not bend evenly. The other alternative is to find a good gunsmith and have him weld a strip on the cover. Most of the welders I know are oil field welders, and not really qualified to do precision work like that.

Save yourself the frustration and have the piece welded to the extra cover. A little bend won't hurt, but to cover that gap it won't bend out that far. You'll get to a point where the metal starts tearing at the corners. Ask me how I know.

I'll go out on a limb, Surly, and say that you have tried this one already! No sense tearing up a perfectly good extra cover. I'll find a good gunsmith and have him add on some metal, I can always file it down and fine tune it afterwards. I shot it today, and the cover did not pop loose, but it still should be more secure.

This sound slike a job for JB Weld. I work with a welder and I am gonna take it to him and see if he feels confident enough to weld onto it without blowing through it. The tech rep from the manufacturer even suggested bending the cover out, to take up an 1/8" of difference. However I have far more than that. Just the way the gun was built. It still shoots like a charm though.
