I've seen where they loop the sling over the butt of the stock and I've seen this rig below...what is it's use? Spasibe, gaspoden! :grin:

It is actually an elastic tourniquet band. This was/is quite common practice with the Russian in the field.

Ahhh, cool! Was this an issue item or a field expedient item? Also, would they still loop the sling over the butt of the rifle? And...last question (for now)...why did they do that in the first place? :grin:

I believe all the Russians were issued a first aid kit containing the tourniqet. If yo look thru the photos on this forum and others ,you will see it pretty common on the triangle folders. I think it was put there to give a better and cushioned cheek weld. the sling would be put around the stock for compactness when Not slinging the rifle for walking, on fixed stock AKs the sling is looped tightly over the front sight base for storage in rifle racks and non carrying times. check the thread called AKs and vz58s around the world in general topic, I think ,you will see many examples and spend hours ( I do regularly) enjoying AK porn.....

Plus with the tourniquet wrapped around the triangle folder you can put the gauze padding inside the triangle to hold that on there as well.

Also, the tourniquet provides a barrier between the metal of the stock and a cheek while shooting - IE, for operating in a cold enviroment.

Putting your face on a piece of steel when it's 18 degrees out = not so good.
