Ok so in would would be necessary parts to convert an ak74 kit to 5.56? If the 74 kits come in september Im gonna get one and want to make it 5.56. (I already have alot of 5.56 ammo and 5.56 ak mags so I dont want to start having to stockpile another caliber on top of 7.62x39) So tell me what parts I would need to convert to 5.56? and what would be involved? (I would be having this built, not doing a home job)

at least the bolt and bolt carrier. I beleive a 7.62 carrier works for the .556

Barrels and trunnions are different.

It's probably not worth trying to convert.

Another newby question, why would you want to change from 5.45 to 5.56 when the 5.45 ammo is 1/4 the price of 5.56?

Does 5.56 shoot any better?

I can reload 5.56 for about 15/16 cents per round. Unless you stocked up on 5.45 when it was dirt cheap you cant get it much cheaper than 15 cpr today. 5.56 will always be available as it it domestically produced and re-loadable. 5.45 is only imported and could one day be the supply could be cut off just like the AK barrels did. Its worth it to me to invest more $ and time to have a gun that I know I will always be able to shoot as opposed to a gun that may or may not have an ammunition supply in the future. But from the looks of things it would cost way more money than I could afford to dish out, I would need at least:
5.56 barrel $100
23mm akm trunnion $30-40?
5.56 carrier and bolt $100+
5.56 bullet guide $10-20
not to mention the extra costs of labor so it looks like im not gonna do it after all

How about 10.9 cents per round TODAY!

Hey drummerdude1188 go buy some 5.45x39 ammo with the money from selling your old 5.56 brass, and enjoy your AK74.
Ya but when you factor in shipping its like 14 crp, I know I know its still cheaper but I already have one 5.56 AK and would like to have another, but with the $$ it would take to convert it to 5.56 I could buy at least 3000 rounds of 5.45 wich would last me for a long time, I need to think about this one.......
