I would like to use this barrel I purchased from Centerfiresystems.com back in February. Yes I've contacted them several times. They weren't any help. Its not a standard AKM barrel. I'm having a hard time locating components to complete the barrel, gas block is 0.680", handguard retainer is 0.750", same with rear sight diameter. And yes I've been to Forbus' site multiple times checking schematics. I've included some pics and the specificationsfrom Centerfiresystems. Hopefully someone out there has either bought and built on this barrel or can tell me what type of components I need to hunt down. Thanks
Specifications
  • 7.62x39
  • Fluted
  • 21-3/8" long
  • Threaded for muzzle brake; 14x1 left-hand thread
  • .9065 diameter at the trunnion
  • New, never drilled for barrel pin
  • Uses AKM length handguards
  • .749" barrel diameter at handguard retainer
  • The retainer lever slot is milled
  • .135" gas port
  • .680" barrel diameter at the gas port
  • 4 flutes in front of gas block 8" long
  • Black Phosphate finish
  • Note: Originally made for combo front sight/gas block like Romanian

APEX Gun Parts used to sell these barrels:

The supplier said they were from a contract that was either cancelled or were a over run.
Anyway, it was a one time buy.

Thanks Richard.
Its unfortunate I'm stuck with it now and can't complete the build because I got no information on what components to put on the barrel.

I had one customer who bought most of these and was disappointed when we didn't restock them.
I think he used the J-MAC combo front sight block, but this was some time ago so I may be wrong:

Customer claimed these built into a very accurate AK, and he assembled a few of them.
I figured some company was building an "optics only" AK and had these long barrels made to use with a plain gas block.
Sorry that I don't have more info, these were a product from a supplier and not something APEX or CFS had made to a print.

Any chance it's for an RPK? Looks like it's fat like an RPK. Does any one have the +/- size for them? It reminds me of my Yugo barrels with out the cooling fins and I wish mine had fluting, just thought I'd throw it out there. Let me check my RPK rear sight block if it might help

Thank you again Richard. Looks like the GBC-13 uses a 0.590" gas block too small by .090" I'll probably have to turn it down on a lathe for M70 components or sell the cursed thing.

Romanian RPK GAS BLOCK IS .789 / 20.05 mm
Thanks JRW!
Too bad its a little too big in diameter. Oh well on to the next one. I believe a Chinese RPK 7.62 has a gas block diameter of 0.672 and hand guards at 0.690 and rear sight at 0.734. I can have the barrel turned down to get to those diameters. However the next battle will be if I'm able to find Chinese RPK or Bulgarian barrel components?

What is the barrel diameter in front of the gas block journal ?
It appears in the photo the step is minimal.
If the Chinese rpk block is .672 and you can find one then have the I’d honed to .679.
Any automotive machine shop with a sunnen pin hone can easily remove .007 “ for a minimal charge.
I saw your post on gunco and posted you may find a vepr gas block closer to 18mm
Check Desertfox sales. ie “demilled vepr gas block”

Thanks . I'll definitely look into that option. I also found a Saiga. 308 gas block that is a clamp tightened to the barrel journal. That is just 0.027 over and will probably tighten to the barrel. However its out of stock.

Description
By Popular Demand. This gas block is designed to fit the Saiga 308 variant of the AK rifle. The gas block utilizes both 45 and 90 degree ports as in our AK 47 / 74 gas block. The front port is for 45 deg barrels and the rear port is for 90 deg barrels. The Saiga 308 gas block combines the front sight and gas block into one assembly. The gas blocks have proven to be very reliable under combat conditions.
The combination gas block/front sight allows the front end of the Saiga 308 to be lightened up and makes the handling of the weapon noticeably more efficient. The assembly also allows the barrel length to be shortened for you guy’s that want to SBR your Saiga’s
The front sight is adjustable for windage with a simple screwdriver. For elevation the sight post is left purposely long so that you can zero your rifle and then use the rear sight as normal.
  • The id of the sight is .7085 or 17.99mm and clamps in place in the existing gas block location.
  • The sight comes finished in black oxide.
  • The gas block sight combo weighs 4.2 oz
  • Gunsmith installation recommended.
  • Pinch screw torque 18in lbs. MAX
Note: There is no warranty for your Gunsmith over tightening and stripping the pinch bolt screws. If your Gunsmith does not possess an inch lb torque wrench, use another Gunsmith.
We get a lot of will it fit calls. We can not keep up with all the AK variants out there. Measure your barrel at the gas block location. If your barrel is .7085 / 17.99mm or there about it will
more than likely fit. If it is not you will have to have the barrel machined in order for the block to fit. Do not try to install the block by stretching it to fit.
