MY FIRST AK-47!!!

1383 Views 21 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  heggalex
Hey Everyone,
I am new to the forum and to AK-47's. I recently bought this AK and did not know alot about it when I bought it. I have been told it is a Romanian G built on an American receiver. The receiver says, Houston TX Elk River and the stock has USA on it. It shoots great with the True Glow Red Dot scope...pop cans at 50 yards. I haven't had a chance to sight it in at a longer distance yet.
Was wondering does anyone else have or has had a gun like this and would like to know your thoughts and experiences with it.
Thanks!!!

Welcome to the boards, and congratulations on your purchase. Sounds like you have a nice AK.

I do not have a G model, but have other AK's, so can't tell you about Elk River receivers. As long as it works and you are happy thats great. Of course you will need more AK's.
Elk River comments

I have 2 Romy's built on Elk River receivers (formerly Global Trades). Very happy w/ receivers. I live in Houston & they're good folks to do business with. You did good on your buy, welcome to the dark side.

Thanks and about the "Needing more AK's" I absolutely agree...However, my wife may have a different opinion on what the money should be spent on....Although, what she don't know won't hurt me!!!!

Glad to know you have not had trouble with the receivers...the day I got it I put 170 rounds thru it and had no problem with it.
Go here, http://www.warrifles.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=104, and contact T.R. Graham. He is probably the one who built the rifle and will be able to answer your questions and tell you all you want to know about the rifle. Tell him that dglockster referred you to him.

You're right about it being built by Special Interest Arms...I finally read the manuel last night and right on the back page was a sticker with Special Interest Arms and the model# and Serial#...my bad for being a typical Non-Instruction reading kinda guy!!!
Thanks for the info!!!
Who makes those handguards?
Those are the sets Global Trades had made and just started to market when they sold to Elk River. The first sets were to be Bulgarian made, and
later sets were to be U.S. produced.

Dont know if they ever started U.S. versions. I do see them advertised on
some vendors sites. Black only.
What vendor sites? I wouldn't mind picking up a set if they have the heat shield.

I was told that this did have a heat shield inside of the hand set up by the barrel. It still gets warm after shooting a couple of magazines thru it though.
Welcome. I hope you signed the waiver about inevitable addiction to AKs.

Thanks for the greeting...and you are right on about the addition. I am already considering getting an AK-74. Any thoughts on this...Pros and Cons, let me know. Thanks.

You have a rifle that can be your friend in hell if you need one.
How do you like that scope?

I love the scope with the little opportunity I have had so far to use it. About 50 yards so far and was able to hit a pop can and get the red dot back on it about the time it hit the ground and pop it up again. The 2 magnification is good at 50 yards, but have not gotten the chance to site it in at 100 and 150 yards yet. I may decide then that 3X or 4X may be better at those distances. After doing some research I am noticing it is a little more bulky, than some of the others, but I do like the performance.
Is your AK chrome lined or button rifled?

I am wondering if SIA has started using US barrels or if they bought enough kits before the barrel ban.
