McConnell was primaried in 2014 by Matt Bevin. Bevin lost to him but became KY governor in 2015, being only the third KY Republican governor elected since WWII.

When power is concentrated in the Federal Government, it become a giant prize worth trillions of dollars to those who control it. This explains much of the viciousness and corruption of federal politicians, who will do anything to get it.

When Federal Government is limited to the duties found in the constition, the states retain control over most of the legislation in the country- for example, welfare, labor laws, health care, education, drug laws etc- power is diffuse and on a more local level, which reduced incentives for the kind of nastiness we see in the Federal government. Local governments tend to be more responsive to the citizens as well.
