LONDON – A taxi driver described as quiet but friendly went on a shooting spree across a picturesque rural area of northwestern England on Wednesday, killing at least five people and wounding 25 others before apparently turning the gun on himself, officials said.

The rampage, in a region famed for its tranquil beauty, shocked a country where handguns are banned and multiple shootings rare — it was Britain's deadliest mass shooting since 1996.

Officers found a body believed to be that of 52-year-old suspect Derrick Bird in woods near the Lake District village of Boot, Cumbria police said. A gun was found alongside the body.

Certain types of shotguns and even rifles are still legal. I hope he used something illegal for the sake of Britons who own guns. I don't know how you go on a shooting spree with the guns that are still available, except that most people probably don't stop to think that they could tackle him while he's reloading his two shot shotgun.

I live in the third world country known as the useless kingdoms(Trust me if I knew then what I know now I would not have moved to a place with such primative living conditions.) And the place is crawling with cops. But it is a health and safety society, so even if they were face to face with a bad guy they are almost required to run away as they are not to endanger or risk any harm to themselves in anyway.

When I was little and one thought of England, it was that place where cops did not carry a gun. Now they do and they have cameras everywhere . . . odd that because we would crack jokes about it. A guy from London was in high school with me, and we'd joke about the differences.

The killers know that they will be made infamous for their actions and will get more than 5 mins of fame.
I think if the media did not give these shootings such coverage " who are they, why they did it, how to prevent it ect...." some of the shitbags would just stay home and off themselves instead of

i believe this is true on a certain percent of the cases. the media has also shown criminals how to make a bomb work better and how not to make mistakes to make sure these nutballs kill plenty of people. it's like the media wants this to happen for the ratings.

that's true....the media never does it's job providing detailed/non slanted info on things that matter....cases like this are the only ones where i would actually say the media SHOULD exercise some sort of self censorship....don't release the guy's name or any details, cuz you do see copy cats every time, and the crazies clearly do have some delusion of how they should do what they do to go out in a blaze of "fame"
