first build, what parts kit to purchase?

447 Views 26 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  JimmyC
Any recommendations what to purchase for first build in $500-$600 range with total budget for the build about $800. This extra $200for barrel, trigger kit, rivets, scope rail, mag if not included in the kit.
In hope to have something that has history and can last longer compare to Palmento GF3 after the same # of rounds.

Unfortunately, your budget is already in crisis. Shop around, but buy from well rated sources. Prices will vary. I personally, have been impressed with Atlantic Firearms kits and customer service. See what they have in stock. Good luck on your new build.

That amount of shekels ain’t gonna cut it in Biden’s Amurrica if you want a surplus parts kit to build. Even a Romanian underfolder is more than likely going to bust your high end, if you use a quality barrel and receiver.

ok, thank you. yes i see that I my budget is about $100-$150 short.
Found a Romania kit , from 1965-1980, CAT II - All matching numbers , includes furniture, fire control group, rivets for $630. Looks like need a barrel, receiver, mag.
How these Romans compare to others? Is this ok for first build?

Roberts right the Romy is ah, er, the usual starting kit. And you can pick one up for around your budget. I say that because other than a new built rifle, that was my starting point. Then you can save for the receiver and barrel and whatever else you need. Like BigJoe said, Atlantic has mostly been good to me.

Yes. That could be a good idea and there are lots of good folk to help you from here. Sounds like Arms of America's descriptions.
Ah, not a bad receiver, but personally, I would go with Childers Guns for that. Just my opinion. And the barrel is good Polish stock but would need some smith work as well probably though I could be wrong about that depending on the particular barrel and if it is threaded, and if you're going to have the kit built by one of our great builders, you may not want the gas port pre-drilled. Just some thoughts.

Yes, handguard cuts and threading can be had for $25 from AOA. I thought Morrissey was ok but kind of generic, I figured if he was building a budget AK and as a first build it would fit the bill.
just ordered all above but receiver. Need to decide If I want to tinker with 80%
with polish mag and muzzle brake i like total is $250 over my original budget. without receiver. Oh well but it's polish kit and barrel. Here we go new a new project starts, "a hard time is always fee!" :)

I have lathe, cut, chambered barrels for my Savage and AR10 before so no problems there. Also have a small CNC mill for de-milling and hand guard cuts.

Polish firearm tend to be a nicer quality than the Romanian, but hey we love our Romanians too.

Hmm, where are you at and would you be interested in putting handguard cuts in a couple barrels?

Well I see you are in KY. Lets do this. When I cut a barrel for my build and understand the process better, will let you know and see how I can help you.

Got out of building for a while due to several things going on. Now I’m getting back into it. I might have something to barter with 👍
The company my girlfriend works for is based out of Dallas. Sometimes she has to go there, but not much since the pandemic.

Will this receiver (AK 74 Receiver (Polish Stamping) FFL ITEM) count as foreign part or US made? ( thinking about 922r)
I ordered LBE Unlimited G3 Fire Control Group, I'm assuming these US made parts? Muzzle brake is US. Hope the Childers Guns receiver will add to the count. How many more I'll need to make sure 10 or less are foreign? Thanks!

Not the right one. Made for AK74. Which is a different caliber than you need for the aforementioned kit right. Definitely US part. Just wrong receiver for your AKM (47) kit. They do have the right one. US Made in W. VA USA and will also be a 100% receiver already drilled for the fire control group and will be shipped to your chosen FFL.;)

No need for a muzzle break. Remember 10yr kids in third world countries are shooting the akm.
