Is there an easy way to do this (without tools)? I've never messed with any UHGs before, so I would like some assistance. Unless I'm overlooking something obvious, it seems like the front retainer needs to be moved forward to get the wood out. It came from a romy kit if it matters.

upper handguard

clamp the rear sight block end VERY lightly in a vise, or if you don't have one you can use a large adjustable end wrench, and grasp the wood and rotate it half a turn in the metal, then pull it off.

and if it is stuck and you can't get a good grip, use a redneck strap wrench.also now as a cheap belt.i just wrap it around and put the buckle on the flat pary of the hg.it squeezes the hg a bit and gives ya a good bite on it.

OK, but doesn't that bend the retaining lips? There is also a clip in there.

Just make sure you have that retaining clip centered before trying to twist it back on, or you may crack the upper HG if it's wooden.
