Arsenal SLR-106FR Range Report

Since I see a lot of bad reviews and few good about the 106 I've decided to issue a write up about my rifle.

I bought the weapon from blackscot about a month ago and it has become a range bitch for me. Like my Ruger Mk II it goes on EVERY range outing.

What I've noted:

1. Yes, the finish isn't really very durable, but I haven't had the problems with it wiping off or lots of flaking, just wear through on high points like the front sight ears and charging handle.

2. The rifle is roughly equivalent to an iron-sighted AR carbine in terms of accuracy. I'm getting 3-4 MOA rested 10-round groups with TAP training ammo. Again, comparable to an AR carbine. An Ultimak and Aimpoint T1 are on my immediate acquisition list, that should slim the already good group size down even more.

3. Reliability has been 100%. 1,200 rounds of various manufacturers and bullet weights without a hiccup so far in addition to the 1,700 blackscot claimed.

4. The heat-shield lower handguards and side-folder makes a noticeable difference in shooting experience. I always disliked my Polytech because the guards would get so hot during firing and take forever to cool (along with the choking unpleasant stench given off by wood handguards when they start to burn, must be the finish on the wood). Length-of-pull on the 100-series folder is perfect for me. The folder is the best I've seen on almost any firearm. While shooting it is completely indistinguishable from a fixed stock. The underfolder on the Polytech looks cool, but sucks.

5. I find the straighter mag profile of the Bulgarian 5.56mm mags much easier to manipulate quickly than the 7.62mm. I don't feel as though I'm twisting my support wrist to such an unnatural angle when I'm rocking the mags out, if that makes any sense. Besides, the mags are certainly easier to find high-quality carrying options for than the 7.62mm AK mags.

In sum, the 106 really changed my mind about the AK platform as a serious defensive weapon. Because the AR really needs constant attention and lots of lube to function reliably I've been looking for a viable alternative. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumping the AR platform outright (because the sheer number of options and the degree of modularity make such a move stupid), but I'm reorganizing my defensive arsenal around the idea of long-term logistical independence. With the sight and light mounting options available today that weren't available just a few years ago, the AK just seems the natural choice for that role.

This is my first post in about 3 years. The last time I was even on the site was before this current format.

The SLR-106FR from this test has been sold on to an acquaintance. He was willing to spend the money on the new ejector and refinish that welding would require (the old-style squid ink Arsenal finish was completely toast long before anyway). The barrel was basically shot out. I honestly can't remember the throat gauge readings (or the exact round count) anymore, but I remember it being really visible. The barrel also had crown wear. It was shooting 6 MOA. Total round count was in excess of 40,000 rounds. The overwhleming majority was South African surplus M193 5.56mm, probably 30,000+ rounds. Some Federal/LC M855 (a few thousand rounds), some Hornady TAP training ammo (1,500? maybe).

The ejector failure wasn't the result of the welds popping, the tab itself broke off. The rifle was still somewhat functional, with poor, erratic ejection, and the occasional stovepipe. I didn't actually realize what the cause of the failure was until I found the piece of the ejector in the receiver under hammer pin.

Any malfunctions? How does the bore look?
Replaced extractor spring at around 20k rounds because of multiple failures to extract on one magazine. Throat gauges a 6, though I don't know for sure that it originally gauged a "0" because I didn't buy the rifle new, it had 1,700 rounds through it when I purchased the rifle. I didn't gauge it when I bought it either, but it is definitely showing noticeable wear, as is the muzzle.

No appreciable loss of accuracy has been noted, still runs 3-4 MOA 10-round groups of a rest.

My 6920 with a TA01 ACOG and a Geissele trigger will print 1 inch or better groups with the right ammo all day long. I won a carbine shoot with it last summer, and the only reason I did was the 100m and 300m scores were bolt action spot on.

Thanks for the write up. I'm eyballin a 106UR, and wondered if they function well in 5.56.
Take note of bold portions from my first post in this thread:
I don't shoot match-grade, I don't use magnified optics on carbines, and I'm shooting 10-round groups. I also stick to stock triggers on defensive use weapons. That you shoot 1" groups (presumably 3, perhaps 5 shot) using a modified rifle with a magnified optic is all fine and dandy, but my comparison was made apples-to-apples so to speak.

28680 rounds, ejector is starting to develop a slight anvil head. Beginning reconfiguration process for 106s, likely to go with a RS mount for the Micros and some sort of barrel clamp for the white lights.

23,070. Barrel showing noticeable throat erosion. Accuracy is only marginally affected. New extractor spring at 20,940 rounds after multiple failures to extract on magazine 698. Bulgarian finish is toast.

Warmgun, thanks but I have 78 of the Bulgarian mags. I tried converted -74 mags and had issues.

Templar, yeah, I've been keeping abreast of the evolution of your rifle. I'm still running the Larue mounts, but I must say the Vltor mount looks superior (but I beat you to the Micro by at least 6 months :goof:). Going to South Hill this year? I hope to attend, hope, hope, hope. This time I'm about 75% sure that I can make the time and money.

Well, added a 4th 106 to the bunch. All are FRs, but the most recent acquisition is a AK-102 clone that I bought from sturmgrenadier back in Febuary, got it yesterday and shot it this morning. It's a shooter. I didn't think the 4" would really amount to much, but it really does. The weapon balances a little better than the AK-101 clones, and it really is more handy in tight spaces (though the standard 106s aren't terrible either). I need to invest in another UltiMAK/Micro combo like I have on the other 3.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it to South Hill this year.......

Oh yeah, the first 106 I bought from blackscot is up to 10,830 rounds, no parts replaced, and none appear to need replacement. Which leaves me again wondering when and what parts are going to need replacing.......

I haven't posted an update recently.

I'm using the light rig that Templar recommended, the Surefire G2 in a LT-606 off-set mount. It works well.

Round count is at 6150 rounds. That's 205 30-round mags trouble free. There are no signs of unusual parts wear. In fact, I'm starting to wonder when, if ever, I might need to start replacing parts. Around this point I would start replacing the small parts in an AR.

The only beef I have is that the Gen II mags I have were a little tight when I first got them. This problem was solved by repeated insertion and extraction. I found that the plastic covering the front lug is pretty thick. I used a knife to carve it off down to the metal and bingo, same effect as repeated use without all the effort. I still prefer the Gen I mags though.

When carrying the rifle in the field I have the rifle slung on a VCAS. The sling is the varient with the buckle on the rear. Upon seeing that Kisara's slings don't have the buckle and decided to try deleting it from mine. I find it carries a little more comfortably without it, plus the buckle assembly was right at my cheek when the rifle was shouldered. That wasn't a major problem, but it was a little annoying and I found deleting the buckle took care of it.

I carry mags in a map case I bought from CTD! years and years ago. It's a Chinese copy of an old USGI design. It's basically a two-pocket man purse in OD green. I carry three mags in the bigger pouch (which is the closest to the body) and my various other stuff in the other pouch (usually topos of the area, compass, small ruler, and a couple pencils). It works well for me.

So scan the film?
It's a pain in the ass, don't want to go to the trouble of registering a image hoster account, don't want pics of my weapons all over the internet, etc, etc, etc.

"No digital camera" is my stock excuse (though I really do prefer film and in fact DON'T own a digital camera).

Back on topic: I'm trying to figure out a light option.

But -- pics ? ? ?

BTW -- You can accept the "claimed" 1,700-round figure. I keep good records.
No offense meant.

No digital camera. I prefer film.

Update:

I received the UltiMAK and T1 on Friday and spent the weekend wringing the rifle out.

The UltiMAK has a lot of fore-aft play, but according to the manual it is designed that way. I placed it as near to eyeball center as I could get. Installation was relatively painless and I had no trouble getting the lower HG back on the rifle after getting the brackets snugged all the way on the barrel. The piece is quality, what more can I say?

The Aimpoint T1 is far and away the best optical gunsight I've ever seen. Anyobody who has experienced an Aimpoint product knows of their quality, but this optic takes it to an unmatched level.

The two combined are PERFECT for the AK. There was no noticeable change in weight or point of balance. Irons co-witness beautifully in fact, that's how I "bore-sighted" the Aimpoint and no range adjustment was needed, cool. At this point, I don't see a viable alternative that can compete with the UltiMAK/Micro combo for the "fighting" AK.

I shot at a variety of ranges and at several different targets. Performance is much improved with the T1 attached. The groups didn't really change, but target acquisition time and shot-to-shot recovery dropped significantly. I shot rapid doubles at B-27s set at 50 and 100 yards, a two square foot rectangular plate (1 foot wide, 2 feet high) set at 225, and a manhole cover sitting against a tree stump at about 400 yards. Nearly all shots were in, or very near, the 5x on the B-27s. I only missed a handful of times on the the 2-foot hanger, and hit percentage on the manhole cover was at least 50%. All shooting was standing or kneeling.

My VCAS should arrive tomorrow (according to UPS), so now all I need is a light. I'm not sure what arrangement I'm going to use at this point.

Round count now at 2600 (plus 1700 blackscot claimed).

Oh yeah, I used the Tactical Tailor Iraqi rig Rainier sells. I'm not a huge fan of chest rigs, but I rather like this rig. Worth the $80 IMHO. Hopefully I'll have the time and money to really wring all this kit out in South Hill.

These shoot as good as AR?
WOW!
Does SAM-5 shoot even better, how about RPK-5?
Iron-sighted AR carbine, yeah. The carbines are both Colts, a 6420 and a 6920. 3-4 MOA has been my experience thus far. That's 10-round groups. Accuracy with my 6601 is significantly better. But again, comparing carbines' accuracy it is about equivalent.

I have no idea about the other rifles, the only AKs that have any extensive personal experience with are a Polytech AKS-762 under-folder and the 106.
