Anyone Elso Get Screwed With Microsoft's Latest Security Upd

HAD mine (XP Home) set to automatic update downloads. Well today's really screwed things up. Seems that if detects most of the popular firewalls, it prevents you from getting onto the internet or your email account, including Outlook Express. Wasted a couple of hours tracking this down. Had to disable both firewalls. Really risky.

I have two firewalls installed, Norton and Zone Alarm Pro. It really doesn't like Zone Alarm Pro at all. I ended up uninstalling this latest update and now everything is working OK. Damn MS anyway.

Solutions for Kb951748 and Zone Alarm Incompatibility Issue
New DNS Security Update from Microsoft Renders Computers Unable to Reach the Internet

Computers around the world have been shut off from the internet by Microsoft's latest security update kb951748. Microsoft has issued kb951748 as an update to fix a DNS (Domain Name System) security flaw on computers running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and the client side of Windows 2000 Server. However, Microsoft security update kb951748 does not play nicely with the popular firewall security program Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is a highly regarded internet security program designed to protect computers from unauthorized access, viruses, and other malware that may be encountered on the web. Zone Alarm has become popular in part because ZoneLabs, its creator, offers a basic version for free at zonealarm.com.

Makers of Zone Alarm say uninstall kb951748

ZoneLabs, the maker of Zone Alarm, recommends completely uninstalling Microsoft's kb951748 until the problem is corrected. Unfortunately, if you have this problem, you have no internet access to find out about this solution. Other users report that shifting their Zone Alarm firewall setting from High to Medium restores access to the internet. However, lowering the security setting on the Zone Alarm firewall increases the chances of your computer being subjected to a security breach.

Microsoft to gain Firewall Marketshare?

Windows does have its own built-in firewall and computers running the Windows firewall instead of the one from Zone Alarm, have not had similar issues with the kb951748 update. As a result, Microsoft may end up damaging an important internet security competitor through this inadvertent compatibility issue between the Windows DNS update and Zone Alarm's firewall program. If users remove the Zone Alarm firewall and start using the built-in windows firewall, then Microsoft stands to gain market share at Zone Alarm's expense.

None of my four computers have had an issue but I'm running Microsoft's firewall so...
That must have been what downloaded last nite. My PC had rebooted when I came back to it after a break. Thanks for the heads up.
It happened to me and I immediately did a system restore to yesterday, fixing the problem.

Boneheads.

Letting the fox guard the henhouse, are we?

I've not been affected by any Microsoft security updates since 1997

Edit: My sig seems to have disappeared. I run linux on my computers.
NEVER allow your PC to do automatic updates. That's an accident waiting to happen, just like the Zone Alarm compatibility issue.

WinXP service pack 3 would lock up the update function in windows preventing installation of additional updates. A brilliant move on the part of microsoft due to a rushed software release.

Always wait at least a week before installing any update. That will usually give enough time for bugs or incompatibility to be discovered by some other unfortunate souls.

.
Happened to my wife this morning (XP Pro), we just removed it in Add/Remove Programs. When it came up again we just told it not to install and all is well ...

You're not supposed to have 2 installed in the first place....and you go with the 2 worst out there! Well, maybe not the worst, but I stay far away from both products. My 2 cents, run the Windows Firewall with your NAT firewall in your router.

I've had auto updates on 4 or 5 XP machines over the years since it came out and haven't had problem 1.

For the Linux superiority, my machines have been seriously borked by Ubuntu updates. I know it's not saying bad about "Linux" because Linux is much more than just Ubuntu, but updates screwing a system are not unique to MS.
Yeap this happened to my computer yesterday. I have XP and Zone alarm. Yall say just uninstall Kb951748 and everything should be cool again. I could only get on because I did a restore to to day before. I'm really computer stupid. I hope I can figure this out. Will see. WarDawg

Well, most update problems are because of folks installing packages meant for other operating systems on their Ubuntu (Debian, Fedora, SuSe, etc), and when the installer gets to the part where it's supposed to upgrade, it gets confused by the non-Ubuntu stuff....

I've had an install of Ubuntu on my machine for 3 years now w/o any upgrade issues (no reinstalls, either).

Sounds like it needs to not get confused on updates, eh? That's my biggest gripe with it, updates have made me put in hours of work to get it back up and running. I don't care if they software is made for Ubuntu or not, it should know how not to mess everything up. The same wouldn't fly for Windows, right?

Unfortunately, there is a "force" option which folks use because they are gonna do it their way.

When one 'forces' a SuSe package into the Ubuntu system, for instance, there's not much choice the Ubuntu package manager has.

Linux is for big boys and girls, who should know better than to force something to 'make it work'.

I'll stick to Linux for servers (have 2 of them running). For desktops, I'll stick to XP until I decide to try Linux again on the desktop
Yea, I too came home to find my PC had restarted and then scratched my head as to how in the hell it could have DNS access but not be able to connect to websites. I even - get this - shut down all my firewalls to rule out a possible conflict and it did not help at all. AKA whatever the update did with DNS - while its conflicting with the firewall packages, the firewall\AV\etc doesn't even have to be running for it to affect it.
