Went to the main post office the other day to drop some packages off. While I was there I inquired about shipping a rifle to an FFL for some custom work and they tell me I have to have an FFL also. Checked the USPS website site and, by the looks of it, I can. WTF? Has anyone shipped one out USPS lately? I know UPS and FedEx changed their policies and now the shipper also has to have an FFL for them to receive it for shipping, which is why I checked with USPS even though I'm not too keen on them. Even checked with the local ATF office and the agent I spoke with THOUGHT you needed an FFL. Not a very definitive answer, unfortunately.

I don't ship all to often but have shipped a few recently via USPS to an out of state FFL. My very rural USPS office never asks and I never declared the contents.

I packed them well, clearly wrote the shipping info and applied appropriate insurance for the firearms. It was trouble free on both ends of the transaction.

On the flip side, the UPS store in town has been a pain in the balls to deal with so much that I don't use them anymore. If you must, use a UPS hub to ship.

It is none of the USPS counter clerk's business what you are shipping other than the little button you push that says the item is not hazardous, corrosive, prohibited or whatever like that.

No need to offer more info to the man.

Say hello, place box on counter, click the above mentioned button, pay the fee to ship, say thank you and have a nice day and go about your daily business.

The post office closest to me went woke a couple years ago when the new postmaster came on board. Posted two NO GUNZ signs and seems to have the staff actively looking for packages likely to contain guns and asking about them. They wont ship without an FFL and special ATF permission.

The other post office a little farther away has always been trouble free.

In our local post office, the "NO Guns" sign only refers to you not carry a Weapon onto the property, not shipping an unloaded one.

I ship golf clubs to gunsmiths several times a year.
I used to do "machine parts" back in the day. Only problem is if your package is lost or stolen you will probably have serious issues collecting on the insurance. Also I believe that under USC18 922(can't remember the subsection) you ARE obligated to notify a carrier that it's a firearm. :cautious:

Found the USPS handbook. Section 432.3(d) states that a non-FFL CAN ship rifles/shotguns out of state to an FFL holder. Going to give it a shot in a day or two with copies of their own handbook and what I found on ATF's site which says the same thing. Hopefully I won't get into a pissing contest with the moron behind the counter. I can just see it now as the postal police drag me off in cuffs for being obnoxious, LOL.

With the rules in place at FedEx and UPS now there is no more counter service for the shipment and delivery of firearms.
Doesn't matter if you have an FFL or not, you have to have an account with UPS or FedEx and they will only pick up the package at your business.
FedEx will no longer ship machine guns, UPS never did (in my span of memory)
If you ship a firearm or firearm related contraband (read 80% receiver to a place they are banned) via UPS or Fedex in violation of their rules and they discover it, the item will be destroyed and you will be banned from using their services.
Both carriers dumped Brownell's for shipping 80% lowers to states where those items are banned (when the AJ in NY sued Brownell's) so they are serious about these rules.
That also means you can't make a claim on lost or damaged firearms you ship in violation of their polices.
A UPS / FedEx store was never supposed to accept firearms over the counter as they are contractors and not allowed to store them.

I hope the USPS doesn't change their game and judging from what I read you better know the chapter and verse of their rules in case you get an idiot at the counter who says no to shipping long guns.

There was a time where my local post office gave me trouble shipping a firearm to an FFL. They made up rules on the spot like "You must ship the bolt in a separate package". I asked them what happens to the insurance claim on package 1 (rifle) when they lose package 2 (bolt) which affects the matching number status. Of course they were at a loss for words.

Asked them to show me the policy, and after 30 minutes (while standing there in crutches) they "did you a favor" and shipped it. Lol.

There was a silver lining... The guy at the counter was actually a decent guy, just uninformed. He mentioned he had an AK bayonet he brought back from Iraq. Brought it over one day and to my surprise, it was Iraqi, and offered it to me for $35.

liars with an agenda, i used a USPS close to my home and after showing them their own rules from their web sight shipping a bunch with no trouble, showed them respect and they showed me same.

but then another USPS i was going to use as it was on my way to where i was going about tried to get me arrested saying i lied about their questions on their machine about what i was shipping, you know where they ask if you're shipping batteries or some chemicals and you click no on it. idiot said i lied, i said my rifle is wood and metal how is that lying? then she said well you need a FFL to ship. i would of set them straight but didn't use them all the time like other USPS i used so just told her that i'd be going to another post office that didn't let their personal feelings get in the way of the rules and regs they have on their web site. copy rules off their web site and teach them their job.
