I got to run my favorite SLR 105R at 400 meters this weekend for the ar15.com shoot at Knob Creek Kentucky. We camped out, be sure to bring a sleeping bag rated at least 20 degrees BELOW what the temperatures might be, also bring a cast iron skillet for cooking- lessons learned. My bag had ice on it in the morning and we cooked our pork loins on a rock- but it all worked, drunkness does not dissipate the cold. Anyway, ran my SLR 105R, with well over 12K rounds through it already, I decided to run it for it's paces. Distance estimated by the range staff 375 to 400 yards, top of their hill (uphill). The 74 hang in there with the best of them. Was nailing a propane tank at 350 yards and then several fist sized rocks at 400 yards. Easily could hold onto a 6" rock at that distance- very accurate as was judged by my friend John running a .50 BMG with a 16X scope at that distance who served as my spotter.

What I learned 4x minimum, 6x would be perfect past 300 yards. The 5.45x39 is easily as accurate as 5.56NATO with standard loadings. I can take out a tank hiding behind a wooden wire spool at that distance, meaning head shots out to 400 yards once dialed in. I was using a tech sight front sight, Kreb's peep rear sight- each time hitting my targets. The scope was dialed in at 400 yards by the end of the shoot. And yes, I own AR's but my go to gun is still my 74's as my namesake implies- proven this past weekend. Good times.

BTW- they had a grill out and I fed the range animals (wild beagles and strays) some steaks.
