Re: What is the toughest rattle can paint for AK

I've been using the high-temp BBQ grill paint from wal-mart/home-depot/lowes on my rifles.....They have a flat and semi-gloss versions. All I did was strip off all the furniture, hung in the shop with safety wire and sprayed one uniform coat on it..let it set for a day and followed up with 2 more coats the same way. Couldnt tell the difference between it and the factory saiga color, also put some serious rounds through them with no negative effects. Doing this during the winter might be a little tricky as far as ambient temperature and cure times go.... I found this thread in my search for a higher gloss 'correct style' finish on my next few projects and thought I'd add my no-bake experience.

If that idea would work it may turn out better with Almond as a base coat...I love to experiment anyway...
    Updates?
    Take heart.

As long as you stick to something like CLP to clean it and don't use something like Gunscrubber on it a spray on finish is pretty durable I've found.I've always baked mine but that's just a personal preference.

I tested VHT engine enamel and FLAMEPROOF

Very durable coating comparing the Rustoleum appliance epoxy(baked)

But it's not solvent resistant. I make swipe with lacquer thinner and it was coming off.

I was very sad as the coating was great. Very thin and durable plus heat resistant.

Isn't the VHT supposed to go through a couple heat cycles before it cures completely? Being that it's intended to be used on an engine and all. I thought I remember reading that. Perhaps that's why it rubbed off with thinner?

Heat cycles are for heat resistance. ( I done that)

It's chemically cures(for chemicals resistance), that's why it says to wait a week.

Rust-Oleum Appliance Epoxy gets my seal of approval:

Magazine is an Izhmash side stamp with original finish. Look at how close the paints are!
