AoA has Romy RPK sidefolder kits

Arms of America has Romanian Md64 RPK kits in stock.
The sidefolder paratrooper type with forward grip (dong].
Pricey but never imported before AFAIK.

What would be a proper receiver and barrel for these kits?

For a shooter or "ultra correct build"?

I can say this - the 1976 and later Romanian RPK rifles did not have mag well dimples. I haven't pinned down the exact year of the transition - techno might know.

Nodak's original NDS-7 receiver did not have dimples. Later NDS-7 receivers had dimples. Hard to find those old style NDS-7 receivers in this day and age.

I believe Recreator has RPK receivers sans dimples.

These 1989 rifles would have selector marks marked in one of two ways - most likely the latter:

    S A R for export

S FA FF "thick font". Best bet is a Weaponmark stencil rather than engraved markings.

As for barrels a Green Mountain or AK Builder chrome lined would probably be the most obtainable.

An original Romanian RPK barrel would be best - good luck.

The holy grail would be to find an AES10B and a kit with that last four of the serial number matching your AES ...

Can't resist, ordering two. Greatly regretted not getting one of the AES10b folding versions when they came in. Might build one as a 5.45.

Never hurts to stockpile them, but I am assuming that AOA is buying these from the Romy surplus export agency, who has this stuff listed.. They even use the same grading system. If that is the case, md.93s (RPK74s) are a possibility.

I’ve quizzed Andrew about this and he says that his supplier acts like they never existed. I told him there are pictures of the 5.45 version fielded with Romanian troops.

That said, I’m assuming the same thing since we know they DO exist and Romania is finally dumping their 5.45 stuff. I’d wait a couple more years before giving up on the real-deal md.93 and building a md.64 folder as one.

I have one of the AES 10-B folders (love it), and would really like for extra RPK dongs to show up so that I can replace the one Century chopped.

The handgrip modification was the only doofy move Century pulled on these rifles, but it was still really dumb and regrettable. Everything else is absolutely solid on them though.

Did Century cut the dong on those AES10B's or was it done in Europe by the user or exporter. Thousa mb ds of Romy dongs were cut in the Balkans.

they may have cut the dong to clear the grab handle

Those particular AES-10B rifles with cut dong - reshaped original Romanian RPK dongs had nothing to do with the Balkans.

They were demilled 1989 Romanian RPK sidefolder rifles in possession of Romania.

Prior to 2013 or so - maybe a little before - was when BATFE decided that no semi-auto rifles built from former military rifles could enter the US - that building semi-autos from parts that had prior military service was not in the "spirit" of the barrel ban.

Prior to that decision we had WASR 10/63, WASR 10/63UF, AES-10B and PSL rifles flowing in that were built from surplus military rifles.

After that decision we see no more AES-10B rifles imported. Subsequent WASR rifles are built from all new parts. Only recently have all new PSL rifles come in. The ones built from new parts are priced accordingly.

Most likely someone at Century decided it would be best to cut the dongs off for import reason - same as they did the WASR 10/63 and WASR 10/63 UF. Same goofy reason they tack weld on muzzle nuts - doing whatever they can to get the rifles into the country with minimal fuss. The factory just reshaped the hand guard material they had - just like they did with Md63 handgaurds. The way to identify those reshaped (gender re-assigned?) RPK hand guards is that the laminate layers are all the same angle - unlike a standard non-dong Soviet style RPK lower hand guard that has laminate at multiple anges.

Tantal had a thread on those reshaped RPK dong hand guards - year 2011 maybe. I was rereading it yesterday. He gets credit for making me aware of those "same laminate angle gender reassiged" RPK hand guards on that batch of AES-10B rifles. He had posted photos but his linked photos from back then no longer function. This is the only photo from the Tantal thread that I saved.

Maybe otus or lopojo would be kind enough to remove the hand guard from theirs and provide photographs.

I can't promise it will be soon, but I'll try to get a pic or two posted one of these days. If lopojo beats me to it, all the better...
