    Look closely at this cocking handle - it looks like like an SKS'. Is that a very first First Model?

    It's a pre-production model, commonly called the AK-47 Assault Rifle Experimental Version No. 3.

    The bolt carrier's the same as on the production version except for the shape of the handle.

    There's a photo of one field stripped on page 77 of Kalashnikov: The Arms and The Man.

    Sweet pic T. The third from the left appears to be some kind of a milled T3 type.

    That looks like the Territorial Army training in Kashmir.

    Re: Russian Type 1/2/3 Rifles

    Here's a very interesting image; said to be of the world's first known insurgent armed with an AK-47; A young Hungarian named Jószef Tibor Fejes with a captured Soviet T2a [early version, with forward sling loop on the lower hg retainer] picked up after a fleeing Soviet soldier dropped it in the streets of Budapest during the early stages of the Hungarian Revolution, late October 1956;

    Considering I believe that was when the AK was first seen by the West, I bet that's true

    Another interesting pic; Stalin's personal Type 1a in a Russian museum;

    ?? ????????? ?. ?. ???????; 'From I. V. Stalin's collection';

    Stalin had a great personal interest in the engineering of Russian firearms, and he was said to have an extensive collection of firearms from all over the world, including a 7,65 pistol found in Hitler's bunker in 1945. He also had one of the very first Luger pistols ever made.
