Question: Reason for different XY stampings on AK-74's?

Why do AKM stampings look like YXY, and AK-74 stampings look like yXY?

Also, Tula AK-74 stampings are different too, they're more like: '|'XY

My guess would simply be as the tooling wore out, new tooling was made that was not exactly the same. I believe that rather than any actual sort of difference in function. Same reason that selector markings changed over the years, and from arsenal to arsenal.

A change in tooling could explain it, but it just seems so vastly different from what was there before, so I don't feel like that explains enough, but yeah, the function is the same.

And it's not like each AK AK-74 from Izhmash was sometimes stamped with a y instead of Y, it looks methodical. Every Izhmash AK-74 example I've seen in the 80's has the exact same yXY stampings.

I have a theory that it changed due to side rail development. The little y stamping on an Izzy AK-74 receiver just perfectly fits in the curve of the left side of RMP3 side rail; so instead of doing AK-74N stampings and AK-74 stampings, they just did all the same stamping. So they shortened the Y stamping on one end on the Izzy AK's to fit the curve, and they just reduced the angle the Y stamping arms pointed out on the Tula AK-74 to do the same. I have no idea why that would be important, though?

I think they did something similar with AK-74 and AKS-74 receivers, where the furthest back rivet in the rear trunnion (on the same side the stock folds) is ground down flat top instead of being left as domed. And since AKS stocks fold up at a bit of an angle 4.5mm pin, they would brush this rivet while folding so it was ground flat? They also ground flat the AK-74 receivers, even though they didn't have a folding stock, but I think they just did it for all the 74 receivers.

But maybe you're right, it could just be that way, because it is. I'm a stickler for detail, though, so I got all interested.

I never thought about it like that man it's an interesting theory. It does look like the change occurred to both production lines for what it's worth:
