Polytech Legend National Match with 16" RPK Barrel and Short Stock?

    Hello,

I'm new to the AK Forums, and have been collecting AK's and other firearms for a few years.

Today I purchased a unique variant that I can't find much information on, and I'd like your help.

Today I bought a Polytech Legend National Match with a 16" RPK barrel with 8 Polytech Chrome Followers. Typically, the National Match versions are 20" barrels with a longer stock. All of the serial numbers match, and the receiver has all of the normal markings as a National Match version.

    Is this a Frankenstein gun?

Someone may have cut the barrel back to the std 16" and re installed the fsb.

What does the front of the barrel look like?

In any event it is a nice shooter grade Legend. As long as the barrel was properly crowned after the circumcision it should shoot fine.

Hope you did not pay too much for it.

    Welcome to the group!

The Legend National Match is probably one of the few Chinese AK variants that breaks the "only rule about Chinese AK variants was there were no rules". They all came with the long barrel and in the very specific configuration with barrel and markings. Either your barrel was cut or replaced but either way is not correct.

Regardless, a great Kalashnikov variation to enjoy.

Let's see the crown, I assume nothing when it comes to Chicom AK manufacturing.

The barrel could have been switched out. There are hundreds of replacement barrels for sale. Dont know why the Chinese sent crates of milled legend barrels over.

If it is chopped or modified, it was well done. Everything is clean and solid. I have read that there are other National Match's with the 16" barrel. I also found this ad from 1995 in the box which calls this model the National Match RPK which came with the RPK heavy barrel, side scope mount, and the 5 chrome follower mags. I'm not sure what the truth is, but even if it is modified I'm excited to take it out to the range.

OK, thanks for posting that. I knew that somewhere up in the cobwebbed attic of my brain there was a memory of seeing a carbine-length NM Legend.

Question is did you get the scope and 100 rd drum that the ad says came with it?

I loved the Shotgun news, upon receipt I would immediately comb over the issue page by page.

    The good old days.

    Barrel looks chopped.

I was buying Chinese stuff in 1995. Those prices were out of range for alot of normal buyers. MAK90s and SKSs were everywhere for cheap.

I suspect they just used the standard Polytech Legend image as a placeholder instead of having two different images for two different guns.

That said, it's really interesting to look at what prices were back in the day. ARs are dirt cheap compared to what they used to cost, even ten years after that issue of Shotgun News was printed.

The "National Match RPK" does not specify a barrel length and like PeaceSells560 said, that can be a generic picture if they didn't want to spend more for a larger ad showing the two different rifles. Also in my mind "RPK" would mean a longer barrel.

Thanks for the comments. I only got the rifle, sling, and 8 mags in the package.

How can you tell it is a chopped barrel? I suppose I'm not sure what to look for. It has the heavier barrel (like the finned RPK models) and a muzzle nut on the end. It looks clean and solid, so if it is chopped, they did a great job.

Now I have the Polytech 762-AKS Galil Sidefolder and at least a form of the Polytech Legend AKS-47/S with National Match milled receiver. The next on my list will be to find a NIB Polytech Legend Underfolder with bayonet. I'm hoping to find one for $3000 or less, so please give me a heads up if you find any out there!

Thanks again, and I'm looking forward to more posts on the forums!
