    Gas port relocation

Im currently working on a saiga ak 102 conversion. My question is what is the best way to relocate the gas port?. Option 1: weld the old hole and drill a new one. Option 2: mill a channel back a few millimeters to extend to the correct location. Will welding it decrease barrel life?

I think the milled pocket shown in the pic is a good solution (though it looks like it should be narrower), why weld and redrill the gas port when there’s another way? I’ve had a gun or two done that way and they functioned well. Don’t know what the optimal depth is.
