To go US, or to go Foreign? 7.62 AK barrels

I'm going to be getting a barrel in the next month for an Egyptian kit.

I'm torn as I want to build the Egyptian with as many Egyptian parts as possible, and a new barrel would either be Romanian or US. It will never be original, but a US made barrel would allow me to keep another part Egyptian seeing as its a compliance part.

That makes me want to go with the US made barrel, but I haven't read a lot about them. I can't find much. I know that good barrels are made here in the states, but a chrome lined barrel for less than $100? That seems really inexpensive. The barrel is the heart of the rifle, and is the single most expensive and difficult to replace part.

I'd hate to get 10,000 rds into a US made barrel 20 years from now and have it be worn out.

    What says the AKforum?

You can always buy a US made AK barrel, APEX won't always have NEW Romanian cold hammer forged chrome lined AK barrels in stock!
We are now well past the half way point of the one shipment that we purchased. With the current production orders for AK's at the factory no new barrels are available as every one made is being used in a new rifle.

I'd go with the foreign barrels while they're still around.

I mean.. those countries produced the damn rifles. I think there's no question about them being in spec. There have been problems with some US barrels.. while most are okay but why risk it?

I have to agree 100 percent with that. get a foreign made barrel, and you won't have any regrets.

Thanks guys. Well, since Apex is over half way through their current lot of Romanian barrels, it looks like I'll have to get one this Monday when I get paid.

Yea, a Hammer forged chrome lined forign barrel. If US AK barrel manufacturers made a CHF CL AK barrel then I would think a little longer about it. I wanted a CHF Tantal barrel but they are not really available, so US 4140 it was. It would be nice if they were made of 4150 or CMV on top of being CL. I can see why US AK barrel manufacturers don't/can't make a CHF CL barrel but they all should be able to make cut rifled barrels out of 4150, CMV or maybe even Stainless. That would be nice.......

how many rounds would it actually take to wear out an american chrome line barrel?
or is it accuracy that makes the chf barrel better?
fwiw if you ever throw a romy barrel in a lathe you'll see how untrue they are.
having said that i have opted for the foreign barrels, mostly from opinions ive read on forums....

Re: To go US, or to go Foreign? 7.62 AK barrels

The only big thing to me is that the quality of the barrels is largley unkown. We really don't know what the lifespan of the barrels are.

Doesn't $95 for a brand new chrome lined US made barrel seem inexpensive? Might as well go with something you know is good while you still can I suppose. It only costs $15 more. There was only one report that I read of a US made m72 barrel showing signs of wear at 200rds. Everyting else seems to be rumor.

Like I said though, it would really suck to get 10,000 rounds into a US made barrel 10 years from now and need a replacement. How many foreign barrels will be available then is anybodys guess.

Yugom5966 had a great answer. WHO KNOWS? Does Big Bob's Discount Barrels even test them at all?

    The factory barrels have this:

"The AK-47 has a service life of approximately 6,000[36] to 15,000[37] rounds."

I've heard "personal guarantees from Kalashnikov" to 25,000, and some document supposedly says up to 50,000 shots without malfunction, but I don't know if this is with acceptable combat accuracy or simply a measure of reliability.

I'm working to confirm with more detailed specifics.

no reason not to buy a new romy barrel now while there available,Im going to get another 1/2 to squirrel away.

the US barrels seem to have gotten better but longevity is still an unknown but I suspect a quality chrome lined US barrel and semi auto fire will out live most of us.

Buddy of mine put about 80,000 rounds of 7n6 through his bulgy krink mg with original arsenal barrel before it gave up the ghost.

Just to give you an idea..

    Oooh, actual data.

What was the issue? Accuracy went to pot?

Oh, awesome! So that's more of a lower limit. If you [properly] clean it, you should get even more than 80k (as long as you don't grind the cleaning rod onto the crown, or let chemicals erode the chromium).

    Thanks for the added info!
