What do you think of Romanian barrels?

Generally the Romanian stuff I have had experience with is really, really, poor quality. Especially the castings. However, I need a barrel for a build project and can buy a new Romanian for $50. Going to replace the sight base, gas block, and front sight base with upgraded components so all I would use is the barrel itself.

Any comments on quality and accuracy?

Quality and appearance are two different values. I am sure they have the same quality of any other european parts they just may not have the same finished appearance.

My most accurate AK is from a unissued Romy G kit. Made me want to buy more while I can!

+1, Despite what people say, Romanian ak's aren't junk. Inexpensive, cheap looking, yes, junk no.

Strangely this reminds me of a Star Wars quote:

"Hey kid, she may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

The Romy's don't seem to worry about apearance so much as it goes bang consisently.

Funny isn't it: My Romanian AK's are the best I have. Right out of the box (as it were) they shoot six-inch groups at 100 yards. That's remarkable in a $150 gun that most people deride. As I buiild other AKMs the Romanians will stay close to my heart. They were the first kits I built. I've built other rifles on which I did a better job and that look cooler, but the Romanians I built shoot straighter, and more reliably than (all ) the others.

In fact I recently bought a bunch of "missing parts" kits from 1964, that have turned out to build very easily and which shoot very straigh. I am a Romanian AKM man.

The Romy's really have a undeservedly bad rep. I agree with the Star Wars quote. I think you'd be happy with the Romy barrel.
