Very cool subject. Soviet (Tula) AKSU lowers were numbered (last 3 digits) on the right hand side until early '83, at which time they switched to numbering them on the left hand side. Vented handguards were discontinued in very early 1985, and the practice of numbering AKSU lower handguards was also halted right about this same time. I have only seen one 1985 rifle with unvented handguards which also had a serial number. Basically, any Tula built AKSU rifle with factory-installed vented handguards should have a serial number. Sadly, although they are super cool and look so sexy, this all adds up to mean that no factory-correct 1986 dated Russian built AKSU was equipped with either vented handguards -or- a serial numbered lower handguard.

AIMR in 7.62 and 5.45, bought a champion pistol .223 and will SBR it as well. (ignore the draco on the right...)

I will take some good pictures soon to add to this thread.

The original Zastava M85 had a barrel about 2 inches shorter than the later ones. It is similar to the Soviet AKS-74u in length and has a straight trunnion and lightweight receiver like the M80 rifle. When the longer version first came out, it was called the M85M. I don't know when the name reverted back to just M85 for the longer version. The M80 started being designed in 1980, the same year NATO standardized 5.56, but production didn't begin until 1985. It wasn't until 1990 that the 5.56 models started using the bulged trunnion and heavier receiver.
